Home Shopping Network celebrates 35th Anniversary

This weekend the Home Shopping Network is celebrating it's 35th birthday. Over the past 35 years we have seen several of their competitors come and go. Also in the past 35 years we've seen many traditional "brick and mortar" department stores and chains go out of business. Meanwhile (correct me if I'm wrong) HSN remains the number 2 TV Shopping Network behind QVC and ahead of ShopNBC.

All this from selling can openers on the radio! Our cable systems added the channel the summer of 1986. I figured it would last long....shows what I know. ;D

I'm amazed that there are so many shopping networks still around. You would think the Internet would make them obsolete.

...and don't forget that in 1987 they had the game show "The Home Shopping Game."

OK I take that back....forget it.....

them old folks dont know how to use the internet ;)

According to the HSN Wikipedia page, as of 2009, HSN's website was one of the top-10 most-trafficked e-commerce sites. As far as the latest financials (from Nasdaq and RTTNews), 1st quarter net income was $26,170,000 (last year's 1st quarter: $20,280,000); while 1st quarter net sales were $747,310,000 (last year's 1st quarter: $710,560,000).

They must be doing all right financially. Another thing I heard years ago, they do such a huge mailing volume, that their main Tampa HQ/processing center has it's own zip code.

Like the HSN network itself, the Home Shopping Game was usually relegated to either late night spots, or on a low-budget independent.

And don't forget CVN - Cable Value Network. That went out of business circa 1990, and Seattle didn't have QVC on cable until at least 1991. Remember the CVN ladder incident?

I thought HSN was only around for 25 years, since ch. 22 (formely KECH-TV) was the affiliate there.

The cable channel HSN went on the air in 1985. So I originally thought they were in business for just 27 years. I do remember full power WEHS channel 60 Aurora, IL carried HSN (they were calling themselves HSC 2 back then) after WPWR moved from 60 to 50 in January 1987 (though I believe WEHS carried then HSC 2 a month or 2 later). I remembered when HSN created both HSN & HSN 2, HSN was strictly carried on cable, while HSN 2 was carried on cable & OTA TV. I don't know if by now, it's just one HSN channel.
