Home Shopping TV

I have a question:
How do these UHF shopping channels make money? Especially the ones not owned by their parents.
Example: WMFP 62 Boston. Owned by Multicultural but runs alot of Gems TV. Is that time brokered or is there some sort of commission arrangement?

As long as you do the TOH Legal ID, air three hours of children's educational programming a week, don't cuss or air porn, do some sort of public service, and air national EAS alerts and conduct EAS tests, you can do whatever you want with a TV station. You can even scramble your signal if you wish (OTA pay TV is no longer done).

You can sell time to whoever you want...home shopping outlets, religious groups, scam artists, etc. You can make different types of financial arrangements. The owners are making the $$$$$$ they want, and the home shopping network in question gets its exposure. It is generally a win-win for both parties involved.

You're right, but I'm not complaining or criticizing the arrangement...just wanted to know how it works. Obviously owners can do what they wish their stations subject to the conditions you mentioned.

it depends on the network..... but usually, if the Home Shopping Channels are on translators, they pay the owner a percentage of the sales made from calls in that area on a month to month basis, and the area is usually defined by area codes i think, sometimes zip codes

With the full power stations, it can be either a percentage of sales from the viewers or an outright situation where they pay for the several hours a day.

I notice the Canton/Cleveland, Ohio Multicultural station, WOAC-TV 67/Digital TV 47 inow has a local phone number (330 area code) to advertise on WOAC.

I would really like to know what people are buying from these shopping channels. With all the stuff available on the internet I can't imagine anyone spending potentially hours in front of the TV and calling to order a product.

Never ever underestimate the buying power of a woman with insomnia. :D
