Home team announcers on LCS and WS

Remember when the "home team" announcers were included as part of the play-by-play team for NBC's coverage of the World Series?

That was how we became exposed to colorful announcers like Ernie Harwell (Tigers), Harry Carey (Cardinals), and Bob Prince (Pirates).

After listening to the TBS announcers during the Division Series, I think it's time for the networks to go back to that system.

Why not . . . things could only improve.

He sounded fine to me . . . but I wonder whether regular fans of the Phils or Rockies would have he same response?

For all I know he could have been making the same kind of mistakes that the announcers on the Sox game were making, although given his strong performance on NESN, I'd give him the benefit of the doubt.

I was actually very pleased with Don Orsillo's play by play and interaction with Joe Simpson. It was interesting to hear him interact with someone other than Jerry Remy with whom he does Sox games all year long. No joking around, no constant "RemyReport.com" references, no Wally The Green Monster comedy, no RemDawg and Orsillo signs waving from the Fenway crowd.

I was mostly pleased with Dick Stockton's play by play as well. He may have lost a step here and there over the years but I've enjoyed him since I was a kid watching him do Sox play by play back in the day (late 70s?). Dick Stockton, along with the late great Ned Martin, are my all time favorite ex-Sox tv announcers.

I have nothing positive or negative to say regarding Stockton's analyst, Ron Darling, or the guys doing the Sox-Angels play by play . Or even the studio team of Ernie Johnson, Cal Ripken, Frank Thomas, or whomever the fourth guy was whose name escapes me at the moment.

NBC had home announcers do half the innings on the World Series. That is why Dick Stockton called Fisk's Home Run in 1975, and on NBC Radio Ned Martin did the play by play of it. Ken Coleman and Harry Cary did innings for 1967 World series

that was great. A much less cluttered broadcast. But I never want to see Frank TV after about 2000 promos for it ;D

Could they have promoted Frank TV any more than they did?????

I would like to see it but, despite all the promos, I'll forget all about it as I never watch TBS.

I got the John Madden, Bush ("fabric!" :D), Eastwood ("slam the salami, if you know what I mean" :p ) and DiNero impressions but who was the guy dressed in black supposed to be?? :-\

but who was the guy dressed in black supposed to be??

Hopefully, the television Grim Reaper, who'll be visiting this show in sort order.

TSB

Various excerpts from a message board at the denverpost.com:

"From listening to the broadcast, I swore the phillies were winning. Orsillo and Simpson are awful. How boring and one-sided can two people be?’

‘Daniel, what are you talking about? Frasier is as professional as they come. The TBS announcers were AWEFUL. I think I fell asleep about 30 times during the broadcast’

‘Recall that the FSN crew had a laughable time pronouncing "Kouzmanoff" and "Saltalamacchia" when their teams visited Denver this season. Perhaps the misprounounced names weren't "bias" and simply the fact that some names are tough to pronounce? Don Orsillo was announcing 162 Red Sox games this year; forgive him if he didn't spend all summer studying up on his "How to Pronounce Rockies Names" booklet.’

‘TBS announcers:

"When the Rockies go back to Mile High Stadium...."

"On deck for the Yankees is Kaz Matsui...." (several hours after he hit a game-changing grand slam for the ROCKIES).

Idiots? You decide’
