"Hometown news, info and more" failure

So huge factory fire in my area. Xylene, Methane, propane tanks etc. a High Hazmat incident 3 alarm fire. You could see the smoke from the next county away, probably the other counties to the east and south also.Turn on the ONLY AM commercial station that has "live" people on it, probably VT but still other people in the building at the other stations NOT VT. 1/2 mile evacuation zone soon expanded to a mile. Nary a word about it on the "Music, news, sports and more" station. Where do I first hear about it? On a non-commercial high school public radio station [91.3 The Summit] that the PD kept the public informed about what was happening, where people were being evacuated to. [Great job, Brad Savage!] Now, not to say that maybe later the AM station popped in later with the mayor's news conference or finally broke into programming, I had quit listening by then because I'd gone to work. But at one point I wasn't that far away from it, probably 3/4 of a mile but could hear and see cop cars screaming that way down the interstate and some of the side streets.

Is this WAKR you're talking about?

Is this the one WKSU-FM is covering the story you are referring to.
Yes. WKSU is NOT located in Akron.

"On a non-commercial high school public radio station [91.3 The Summit]". Although owned by the Akron Public Schools, the district doesn't put money into it (according to Wikipedia) and it's not run as a high school radio station. Do they have Kindergarten through grade 12 students on the air?

You have a better shot of hearing breaking, local news on WNIR than on WAKR...If you can get through to the host on the phone lines!!!

Akron Public Schools holds the license so therefore it's considered a "high school station". There are plenty of other ones out there owned by school districts that hold the license but generally are not programmed by the schools and they have a hands off policy but do expect them to adhere to certain standards [i.e. no songs with curse words or they're to be bleeped out, probably no religious tunes so they don't run afoul of the separation of church and state rules.. ] I do remember discussions during the pandemic and a possible teacher's strike that APS was thinking about using the station to broadcast school lessons which they would have every right to do since they hold the license. I am sure there were more then a few heart attacks going around the hallways of WAPS when that was brought up.
and as far as kindergarten-12th students, they do have high school interns that are sometimes on the air....not doing shows that I know of, but short bits here and there. I just hope that there are jobs in radio (or associated areas) when they graduate from college or wherever.

Again WNIR just bills itself as "The Talk of Akron" but basically they're a Kent station. Even though I am in their demographic [a "cranky, old white guy"] I don't listen to them as I find it boring, uninspiring radio.
Taken from WAKR's web site: 1590 WAKR is part of one of the most advanced radio broadcast facility in Northeast Ohio. Our broadcasts are produced by one of Ohio's LARGEST RADIO NEWS OPERATIONS USING STATE-OF-THE-ART EQUIPMENT. [Capital letters mine]. Now, what good is having the largest radio news operations if you don't use it? I listened for close to an hour while this mess was going on and not a peep from them about it. If they eventually went on air and covered it, good for them. But in the meantime-when WAKR-was playing music-I jumped over to 91.3 and heard at least three times them giving info on what was going on. I wasn't too far from where all this was taking place-and it was eventually included in the evacuation area when they expanded it after I had left-You could see the gigantic cloud of smoke going up and people were wondering what was going on, I basically told them what had happened. You would have thought WWIII had broken out from all the cop cars screaming that way with their lights and siren going and people wondering what the hell has happened to have that many cops heading for ir.

You figure WHLO would have been all over it. 😟

This is a classic example of where radio is now. A stripped down staff strives to be the live, local station that is the news leader. They should have caught this and they should have a reporter out there to give updates (or at the command center). As the revenue continues to diminish for over the air radio, things will only get more bare bones.

An aside as Yabadabado1 referenced separation between church and state, I offer this factoid. Even many judges and politicians get this wrong: Congress may not mandate a specific religion (or denomination). It has nothing to do with religion in schools or the 10 Commandments on the courthouse lawn. When the United States declared independence, Europe was a bunch of Kingdoms. The religion of the King and Queen was the national religion. To be of a different religion or denomination essentially made you an enemy of the state. Quakers got their name from a judge when a Quaker was brought to the judge for not being a member of the Church of England, the Church attended by the British Royalty. The judge noted the fellow was so scared, the was 'quaking' in fear. The Apostolic Lutherans began in Finland but met in homes after services at the Evangelical Lutheran church because that was the denomination of the Royals. They were rather secretive because if the police learned of their meetings, they would raid the place and put everyone there in jail. The writers of the Constitution knew about this firsthand. They didn't want the same to happen here. Thus, separation of church and state really is about making it impossible for the state to mandate a certain religion or flavor of that religion as the 'official' religion of the country and nothing else.

You're right, I got it wrong. What I probably should have said is stay away from tunes that may be associated with one particular religion because then you'll have every other denomination screaming about discrimination because you're not playing the tunes associated with THEIR religion. be it Hindu, Buddhists or Flying Spaghetti Monster.[and I assume their most sacred song is "On Top Of Spaghetti"]
