Just curious...I know they pick up network shows off the bird these days in Hawaii, tape them and time-shift them a few hours to stay in West Coast pattern today. But in the days before the satellite feeds were available, did they tape network shows in Los Angeles, fly them in and delay them a week to keep them in pattern; did they kinescope them on the West Coast and airmail them, then time-shift their play; or was there a trans-Pacific coax cable that allowed them to take a live network feed, tape it in Honolulu and replay in pattern?

In the early '70s, they only used the satellite for live news and sports. Everything else was taped and flown over from LA, then aired on a one-week, in-pattern delay. I'll guess that it was the same in 1959, except that it was impossible to air live events.

For years, filmed programs were flown over on film, live programs flown over on kinescope. Remember, in the 50's and 60's net programs that were taped, were also kinescoped, as not all small market or distant market stations had expensive two inch quad machines. But everybody had a film chain. Tape later replaced kines, and film programs were later tranfered to tape and then flown over to the islands. Now, two things to consider that will drive this boards "schedule fans" up the wall. (1) Because all programs are sitting on reels, you can run them in any order, schedule or pattern you like. There is no other affiliate for 2,500 miles, so who is the viewer to compare schedules with? The practice of making up a schedule, and not clearing marginal network offerings combined with hours(!) of locally produced prime time programming had a long history in Hawaii. (2) And get ready for this. The Honolulu afilliates paid all the shipping charges! How did they do this? Well, let me explain, and anyone who visited or lived in Hawaii uo until 1990 can verify this happened every night on every net affiliate. Off the top of my head, let's take a Sunday night, mid 60's, on CBS. Keep in mind that any program on this in pattern list could be and often was pre empted by local or syndicated programs. Up into the 80's no markets three big affiliates produced more local prime time programming than Honolulu. OK, follow this schedule, and remember, nothing is coming down a network coax on clock time:
6:00-6:28 Lassie-CBS Film
6:28-6:33 FIVE minutes local spots
6:33-7:01 My Favorite Martian-CBS Film
7:01-7:06 FIVE minutes local spots
7:06-7:34 1st half Ed Sullivan-CBS kine
7:34-7:39 FIVE minutes local spots
7:39-8:07 2nd half Ed Sullivan-CBS kine
8:07-8:12 FIVE minutes local spots
8:12-8:40 1st half Judy Garland-CBS kine
and so on. There was not limit on how many spots you could run. You just stopped the film, kine, or tape, ran your spot break, and then resumed your schedule. Extra spots, extra income, pays for shipping.
Natural spot breaks inside the show were often extended depending on the programs popularity.
The NBC Thursday's of Cosby and Hill Street often had the 10:00 PM news starting at 10:20 PM
It really screwed up your VCR settings.
Was there an upside? Well, all kines and tapes were made in NY or LA. Full 15 kc audio!
