Hooking up Hollyanne EAS HU 961 to Notebook PC

I'm trying to look at the settings in our Hollyanne EAS HU 961 Model though my notebook PC. The com port on the PC has 15 pins and the Hollyanne has 9 at it's com port. Should I find a 9 Pim comport male cable that ends in a USB Connection? My com port on my Gateway MX 6438 looks like it's for video monitor out...What do you use out there? Probably not many stations still using that Hollyanne HU 961. They stopped productions as it's not a very popular addition to any station. This will be for a LPFM that won't be able to cough up the $ for a Burke, TFT, Sage, etc...ThanksRon GitschierPalm Coast, FL

Rocky, I've never seen a notebook with a 15-pin serial port. If it's a 15-pin high-density port that looks like a video monitor port, I'd be willing to bet serious money that it's a VGA video port. Most current model notebooks don't come with serial ports anymore. You'll probably need a USB-to-serial adapter. You'll also need to check the Hollyanne docs for information about the type of cable required. It's likely that you'll need a null-modem (modem eliminator) cable instead of a straight-through cable. Ask the "computer guy" where you buy the USB/Serial adapter. If he doesn't know what a null-modem cable is, you either need to talk to somebody who does, or you need to find a competent computer store.

Sounds like you need to find a USB to serial adapter or an older notbook with a 9 pin serial connector. I've hung on to my old Dell laptop just for situations like this. You will also need the Hollyanne software installed on the laptop to change the setup on the HU-961.RFB

Thanks for the suggestions, gents. I overlooked the fact that our on-air PC has the necessary 9 pin socket, so I'll just go live assist and then use the PC for checking my Hollyanne's setup parameters, etc once I load the Hollyanne software on the on-air PC. The other studio PC uses the sole 9 pin socket for the mouse... :- Aah, the joys of small potatoes low-budget broadcasting. I appreciate the input very much, being a bootstrap technician.Ron GitschierPalm Coast, FL

Ron or anyone else.....We also have a Hollyanne HU 961 here. Since I recalibrated it via the com port, it's been flashing the "alert" light. Does anyone know what that means/how to fix it?
