WSSA, 1570 Khz, used to do that smooze back when it was under different ownership. But I've been told it made good money for the station.....
This same guy now owns a station down on the east coast of Florida.....I'll bet he's doing it down there too.
Yes....it does make for boring radio. But give the guy some credit-it's an innovative way to make money with a station which no one listens to!
Yes, I actually filled in doing that Radio Auction. We sold hotel rooms, restaurant meals, discount coupons, and attraction tickets. That was WSSA's bread and butter back in those days. The owner gave me one of the deals for my honeymoon as a present. People would get testy and would bid very high on hotel rooms. In some cases, we actually got more than the room was worth. Not to mention, the station never paid for the rooms or meals. They simply traded/bartered them for resell on the auction to get the money.
That same owner is still doing the same auction on WELE AM in Fla. as you metioned.
