This same guy now owns a station down on the east coast of Florida.....I'll bet he's doing it down there too.
Yes....it does make for boring radio. But give the guy some credit-it's an innovative way to make money with a station which no one listens to!

Yes, I actually filled in doing that Radio Auction. We sold hotel rooms, restaurant meals, discount coupons, and attraction tickets. That was WSSA's bread and butter back in those days. The owner gave me one of the deals for my honeymoon as a present. People would get testy and would bid very high on hotel rooms. In some cases, we actually got more than the room was worth. Not to mention, the station never paid for the rooms or meals. They simply traded/bartered them for resell on the auction to get the money.

That same owner is still doing the same auction on WELE AM in Fla. as you metioned.
 
In the late '70's I worked at a Big Band station in New Orleans. Great format with some odd twists. For one thing, we carried New York Yankees baseball broadcasts live. No idea why, but I loved working that shift. But every Saturday night we also carried a pre-recorded reading of the rosary from some local Catholic church. Yes, Saturday night rosary, folks. Competed right up there with SNL and monster truck pulls. Fortunately it WAS on tape and was only about a half hour long, so I had time to get caught up on the potty breaks and coffee.
 
When WSAI was on 1530 kc out of Cincy, playing "real oldies" they aired the rosary late at night, though I think it was on Sundays.

Ahhhhhhh yes....we did the Obituary column and our music for it was dubbed on a cart marked "WHOS DEAD IN DIXIE" and we did the Swap Shop too....like you said....Thats some good radio !
