Horrific Indy crash live on ABC

Hmmm... Not sure how that works... Also, I don't recall seeing spots for the garden variety pharmaceuticals that usually clog up the advertising palate on the network news shows during the week, so I don't think this theory sits with me... Did ABC know that the Wheldon death announcement would be made at 6 PM ET? (For the record, the local news started just after 6:30 PM, at least in New York; I guess they still could have went with World News since there's a decent window.)

I agree with most of the other comments that the announce crew did a great job of filling more that two hours of time. Coverage of Indy Car races have included the "side by side" commercial breaks where the left screen continues with the racing action in silence and the right screen has the commercial and audio. I don't understand why ABC continued to use the "side by side" for the first couple of commercial breaks when there was no action on the track other than the cleanup of debris. The injured drivers had already been moved either to the infield care center for evaluation or transported to the local hospital for further medical assistance. It almost seemed like the breaks were already programmed to run in side by side mode and could not be changed on the fly.

That was probably the case. IndyCar has been doing the side-by-side for some time. NASCAR just started this year and only during the 2nd half of the race.

The irony is when ABC/ESPN does one of those "non-stops" (as they are called) while there's a caution... ::)
