Horror Show Alert!

As a public service, I am posting information on a horror show that viewers in New England should avoid watching all costs if they do not want to get depressed, outraged, irate, angry, or lose their sanity.

ESPN Classic will be rebroadcasting an edited version of the 1978 American League East playoff between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees this Monday (October 3rd) from 2 to 4 A.M.

Thankfully, this horror show will be on in the middle of the night and most people will find this easy to avoid.

Besides, why is ESPN Classic running it at all (even if it is being shown in the wee hours of Monday)?? Do they want the Yankees to win this year's World Series and think that by running the 1978 playoff game, they can encourage this year's Yankees team to win it all??

Hey! It's not a horror show for everybody! I live in New England and I am a Yankees fan. ESPN Classic may be based here in Connecticut but is catering to a nationwide audience. You're obviously a Red Sox fan and you have every right to be. It was pointed out last fall that there's a bar somewhere in Manhattan that is very PRO-Red Sox. One of the New York papers (Daily News?) did a story about it during last year's ALCS. I have my YES Network here in Connecticut (yes, NESN, too) and I am happy.

By the way, was it a coin flip that gave Boston that game to begin with?

Lastly, I see that ABC Sports carried the game naitonally. Going by the clip I've always seen (with Bill White's "Deep to left..." call), I think WPIX-TV was airing the game in New York City (I was only 7 then and can't remember).

You're correct on both counts.

In Boston, the game was seen on both WCVB-5 (as WCVB is an ABC affiliate) and Red Sox flagship WSBK-38, which originated it's own local telecast with Dick Stockton and Ken Harrleson. Incidentally, it was Stockton's last game as TV voice of the Red Sox. He left Boston and was replaced for 1979 by longtime Red Sox radio play-by-play man Ned Martin.

I do know Keith Jackson called the game for ABC.

I may be wrong, but I thought that with the exception of a "unilateral camera" for each broadcaster (to put their own commentators on-screen), the raw video feed was the same for the ABC, WSBK and WPIX broadcasts. I believe each also had their own graphics.
