Hot 100.5 To Get "The Vibe"

Lance Venta hinted at this in a RadioInsight.com "Domain Insight" registration blurb on 6/17/2022:

Further investigation reveals that Max Media of Hampton Roads has registered www.1005thevibe.com:

Current web site for Hot 100 / (Hot 100.5): https://www.hot1005.com/

WVHT-FM-100.5 has trended share-wise:

HOL 2021 = 2.4 - JAN 2022 = 1.7 - FEB 2022 = 1.7 - MAR 2022 = 2.3 - APR 2022 = 2.3 - MAY 2022 - 2.8

They pulled even with WNVZ "Z104" in May with the 2.8 share.

Do I smell a format change? IIRC, the last time a Hampton Roads station sported the "Vibe" moniker it was an Urban AC. I seem to remember Clear Channel using "Vibe" about 15 years ago when they bounced Jammin' Oldies and/or Urban AC between 105.3 and 107.7. Is it possible that Max is going to try to go up against 95.7?

I guess Vibe could be used on a Top 40 station. But most likely it is for an Urban AC format. With WVKL's giant ratings, a challenger would make sense.

Makes you wonder what will be better on the new 100.5 the Vibe compared to 92.1 the Beat besides signal and maybe some local talent, should they head towards an Urban AC/Classic Hip Hop direction.

Could it be Classic Hip Hop?
That was my initial thought as well, neosolbrudda. I see that you are a Frequent Participant, so you may remember an old discussion from 2015 in the Radio Formats section of this board under the CHR/Rhythmic/Hip-Hop section that discusses whether the luster is already off the Classic Hip-Hop fad. There are other discussions here and there on this board that talk about the underwhelming performance of Classic Hip-Hop, so I just don't know if Max Media could add anything to this format.

Obviously, the luster is still there for Classic Hip Hop. Look at NYC, Buffalo, Phoenix, Reno, Detroit, LA, and several other markets.

100.5 The Vibe debuted on Monday 6/20/2022 at 5 PM ET with what VP of Operations + Programming Eddie Haskell describes as Urban Adult Hits.
One sweeper/liner states "Hampton Roads' Biggest Playlist" (or similar wording).
"To the other radio stations that say they have the most variety: hold our beer!"

Anthony "Tone Hollywood" Wheeler is named Brand Manager (previously in middays at 107.3 JAMZ Greenville, SC).

Urban Adult Hits...okay guys, is Hampton Roads ready for this? Will it work? I don't really listen to 95.7 that much, so do y'all think this will impact them?

This format may be similar to KRBQ/San Francisco when they were "Q102.1" from 2019-2022. Not an unusual occurrence for them to play Al Green next to Dr Dre.

Never Too Much - Luther Vandross (2nd repeated song; see 3rd song in 5 PM ET hour)
Can't Help But Wait - Trey Songz (3rd repeated song; etc.)
---will be interesting to see if this is indeed a three hour loop of songs that will be repeated
or if there will be new selections sprinkled in.---

They've sprinkled in a few gospel songs, which lead to a real train wreck around 10:20 p.m.: "The Best in Me" by Marvin Sapp followed by "Hip Hop Hooray" by Naughty by Nature (LOL). Of course, I realize they're just playing random songs right now and that they'll be mindful of things like that in the future, but I still got a laugh out of it.

Edit: I didn't look through the list that pjc1961 posted above. It looks like they're playing some of the songs in the same order because I noticed the same Marvin Sapp/Naughty by Nature trainwreck in the list above.

Maybe they should've named it 100.5 "Black" Jack FM....;)
Seriously though, has that ever been done? The variety hits We Play Anything station in Hampton Roads, 93-7 Bob FM, does pretty well. I don't see that working with an urban format because the sub genres are too extreme, especially if the station wanted to incorporate gospel, which a lot of Black AC stations seem to do. There's no room for Marvin Sapp and the cussing and adult content of Luke Skyywalker/Luther Campbell on the same station, LOL.

I absolutely agree. That's going from one extreme to another.

Thankfully The Vibe has abandoned its original 3-hour loop of songs and is offering up the kitchen-sink variety of R+B hits that the station is touting. Hopefully they'll be able to keep it fresh and move titles in and out when needed.

As Cordelia mentioned earlier, interesting to see what effect (if any) this has on 95-7 R+B and (indirectly) 93.7 Bob FM.
Agree with CassChopper re: good for WNVZ + WPTE, although maybe not as much as we'd think
(the audience will scatter around several outlets that 100.5 was likely already sharing with).
