Hot 102 in Lexington

When did Lexington's Hot 102 come into existence? Their format used to be just a mainstream Top-40 but recently switched to more of a rhythmic top-40 with more hip-hop and rap, etc. Also, they just got the Kidd Kraddick morning show just a few days ago. What is up with their power? They only put out about 4.6 Kw and have a tower height of about 373 ft (HAAT)! Their signal only reaches up to Cynthiana, Ky to the north and down to Danville, KY to the south. Lexington and Frankfort's other top-40 station WLKT 104.5 the Cat is 10 times better. Their ERP is about 50 to 60 Kw and their tower height is about 470 ft (HAAT) (or it used to be).
Their signal can reach all the way up to Cincinnati, over to Louisville, to Morehead, Ky, and down to Somerset!
I personally think 104.5 is better, anyone else?

Hot 102 cannot expand their power due to short spacing with 102.3 in Cynthiana.

A few years ago, Cumulus acquired WCYN-FM to null it's signal toward Lexington so WLTO could cover the entire metro with minimal interference. What I never understood is why Cumulus just never simulcasted 102.5's signal on 102.3 if the signal to the north of town was an issue. I thought it was rather foolish to simulcast the 100,000 watt 92.9 country format on a station that is within 92.9's primary coverage area. Now, they simulcast WLRO's fledging sports/talk format...something that is equally perplexing.

Thank you for replying Apollo 7979. I think it was stupid that WLXX 92.9 the Bear simulcasted on 102.3 in Cynthiana, too and I do think that Hot 102 should replace 101.5 the Planet on 102.3 because the planet isn't doing well in the ratings anyway, and hot 102 is probably in good competition with 104.5 the cat, so they should try to put their signal on 102.3 to reach the northern metro counties.

The frequency 102.5 signed on in 1988 as Urban WCKU (U102). It segued to Churban when 94.5 went AC and 100.1 was trying to "find itself" prior to country and the transplanted Double-Q. Even though the signal had ratings, it had little revenue so the format was flipped to "Arrow 102.5" all rock and roll oldies. Somewhere in the deregulation inbreeding 102.5 fell under the same ownership of 101.5 (formally 101.7) and Arrow landed on 101.5 and 102.5 did the format of the month club for a while until Hot 102.

Wasn't WLRO with ABC/SRN's Gold (Oldies Radio) format for a good portion of that time? I also remember Jammin' 102.5 during the rhythmic oldies craze and the classic country stint as U.S. 102.

What's up KYJake, just saw your post, and figured I'd comment.. True from what I know the schtick that we operate on isn't very powerful, so it's a tough signal to pick up clear unless in Lexington

Negative, not since I started my show at least, The book comes out in a few weeks here and I'm are eagerly awaiting the ratings, should beat the Cat, just because it's a bigger signal doesnt mean it's a better product

I urge you and anyone else to listen to HOT 102, we just picked up Kraddick for the AM show, Tabatha in the afternoons, and myself behind the mic for the KinKAID Radio Night Show, improving imaging and music as well

The only way we might lose to the Cat is because of the mainstream songs they play and we cannot due to CHR-R....The Nickelbacks, Hinders, Rejects, Panic!s etc... Bottom line if we played the same identical music but just went by station and jocks HOT 102 wins hands down

Thanks for replying Kinkaid! I have been listening to Kidd Kraddick in the morning because it's a good show. When I go to Baton Rouge, La for Christmas and in the summer to see my family, I listen to the show there on WFMF-FM because I couldn't get it here before, so I'm glad Hot 102 started broadcasting it!...and I will start listening in the afternoon to your show as well-since you say it's good and I believe you. It's hard to get 102.5 up north of town where I live on just a regular radio, but when I'm in the car, I can pick it up good-so it's cool. Anyway, I have to go, thanks again for replying and tell everyone at the station (and at Cumulus) I said hey. -KYradioJake

hey man right on hope ya check it out BUT it's not the afternoon show I do the night show from 7p-mid, so you and anybody else on here hope you guys check it out...

Hot 102 has a good signal here in Danville. I've heard it in Jefferson county until 102.3 bleeds over too much. The same thing happens to it as I travel toward Somerset. I think they compete with 107.9 The Beat more than 104.5. I know here in Danville, 102.5 puts down a better signal than 107.9 with less power. They also sound better with just as much bass but cleaner treble response. !07.9 is flaky in downtown Lex whereas 102.5 is rock solid. 102.5 should be Urban and 107.9 should move their transmitter and become Urban adult contemporary.

What A Joke that comment was..WLKT proved the station that is was in the last ratings...WLTO is a poorly imaged and programmed radio station that obviously does not understand the object of a solid quarter hour and how to hold listeners attention. The lack of talent that understands how to connect with the 18-34 year old is another glaring hole, especially in afternoon drive. I don't believe that station will make it in the long run.

Hot 102 has a very good signal. It depends on the radio, not the station. I can hear it in Jeffersontown near Louisville and near Somerset to the south. They are competition for 107.9 which also has an excellent signal. Hot 102 beats 104.5 hands down. Product is everything, not power. Keep up the good work Hot 102.

You can check the last batch of ratings and figure out who the better radio station is....WLKT had twice the listening audience of WLTO, it wasn't even a close race..LTO was created to try and bring down LKT...They have tried unsuccessfully for 3 years now, and they still brand themselves "The New Hot 102"...They seem to be a nothing but a pawn to try and keep WLKT's numbers down so that the cumulus country station can be #2 in the market....

the thing that urks me about HOT 102 is that they continue to brand themselves as "All The Hits". And I don't understand why they play Kelly Clarkson from two years ago but won't play her new material. Same with Pink, Get The Party Started is in rotation but U + Ur Hand is not.

Too me when I listen to WLTO it sounds like there is an echo, with someone talking, or the music. No matter what radio I listen too. I think Hot 102 should leave 102.5 now that 590AM similcasts now on 101.5. Seems like they could move hot 102 to 101.5 and increase the power. Which they still could be called HOT 102.

Her new material is testing and selling quite poorly. It's not getting much play anywhere.
