Hot 1029 - Rate the Rhythmic

Is WDHT a good example of a Rhythmic? I talked to Scott Sharp and he said that HOT 1029 doesn't try to be Rhythmic or Urban... he programs to Dayton. He realizes the CHR listeners need to hear their Ke$ha and Gaga but the Urban listeners want their Lloyd Banks and Gucci Mane... we only have two "hit" stations in Dayton... Channel 945 and Hot 1029. I think both are cookie-cutter and watered down. 945 being PC isn't good either... what do you guys think?

Hot 102.9 is a terrific sounding station. Given the limitations of not having a local morning show, or midday personality, or a budget, I think Mr. Sharp does a great job keeping the station up, fun, and local. If he's giving Dayton what they want to hear, who cares about labels? Obviously the ratings say they are!

Here's the thing...

Why can't they have a local morning show or midday personality? It wouldn't even be much more to have someone voicetrack middays if anything. I dunno if I agree about it being fun because the imaging sure isn't. Scott is a great guy, but JJ's syndicated show on 945 is more upbeat. The Partyman is about the only "fun' thing on Hot 1029 and he fits Urban more than he does Rhythmic. If I was PD of Hot, I'd be more risky with the music. I hear people complain about how soft and slow it is. I'd take that imaging and make it 10x more hotter and have it overlap song intros and be DAYTON'S HITS & HIP-HOP. I'd also work on getting more jocks or at least something to spice Dayton up. We're a dying town when it comes to hit music. Although Hot lacks a few things, it's better than corporate mess on 945.

And what color is the sky in your world??

So I may sound like an idiot or foolish for even assuming something like that. But it happens! There are small markets that sound better than us and that's a fact. Z-93 was nothing special either. I wish it was here to fill the CHR-void that 945 is having a problem filling with it's syndicated bullcrap. However, if you remember, both Z and 1029 was pretty straight-forward and dry. I didn't write this post to argue, but... Hot 1029's sound is not why they have ratings. It's because it's the only choice. 1029 is able to grab the CHR and Urban listeners. That's what Rhythmic is all about. They have a good balance, but there is more they could be playing. Take a look at WCKX Columbus... they used to be rhythmic, but flipped over to Urban after many people complained about them not catering to the hip-hop community. They were pretty strong rhythmic playing even more than Hot 1029. However, now with them being Urban... they still have a massive recurrent and gold playlist. 1029 lacks this and is much more repetitive. I get bored very easily with Hot and it becomes very predictable...

Not saying you're wrong, just not realistic. In this day and age of 'just good enough', no cash-constrained owner is going to put in a penny more than they have to. Getting the ratings? That's good enough. Not right .. just reality.

Hot 102.9 has had "The Russ Parr Morning Show" since way back in late August, 2001, just a few weeks after they debuted...most folks like it, so why change it? Not sure why they don't have a midday personality...they haven't since they let Bob Summers go over at WROU early last year and replaced him with Hot's then-midday personality Angel O'Shea, whom they never replaced on Hot. Hot's other midday personalities over the years have been JJ Jennings and Diva. My guess is budgetary reasons. Also, in radio, it's the ratings that make the world go 'round, so if Hot's performing in their demos like it should, then why mess with a successful formula? i.e. if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Guess all of that makes sense! It's just sad you can practically put nothing into a station and it can do well. Cookie-cutter stations can grab the ratings of everyone else, but me, who doesn't matter anyway will listen to Internet Radio :)

I must admit...as much as I detest sattellite jocks and sattellite formats in general. I DO admire both Russ Parr and Tom Joyner for what they do in the african-american community and they both remain positive on the air....and NO trashy political jive talk.(re:Rush,Beck,O'Reilly et al) Love it when Russ plays "Jesus Will Work It Out" on Monday and Friday mornings. I've caught myself stomping my feet and tapping the steering wheel while on my way to work on many occasions. Russ rocks the joint on 102.9.

Russ Parr does work ratings-wise for 1029. I wonder how's he doing compared to Elvis Duran because I heard he's bringing in the numbers for 945 for a change.

I have to disagree. I have heard Tom Joyner express the political trashy talk many times from a liberal perspective. He consistently and boldly supports Obama on the air and he criticized George W. Bush constantly during his administration. I have often heard Joyner make racist comments towards White-Americans as well. If it is wrong for Rush, Beck and O'Reilly to speak in this manner then it is wrong for Joyner. This is the reason why I choose not to listen to either side, Rush or Joyner.

Very true about Joyner. Whether it's right or wrong for either side to do it, Joyner definitely targets his African-American audience... forgetting he does have white listeners that listen to Urban AC! My mother who is white listened to his show, heard a racist comment and was very shocked!

I can't imagine Joyner saying anything actually racist, maybe racial, but not racist. Plus I can't really imagine anything that would be racist against white people to the point of being offensive. "Honky" is nowhere near as bad as the n-word, for example.

As an African American, I will say I can believe this, but this is just the way it is today. There is a double standard, and while most people cannot see these things, I can. Most people cannot see reality. They only see through the lens of their racial thoughts and beliefs an what they've been trained to believe, and I also notice that people who share my skin color are more racially biased than those outside of my skin color, and are quick to assume everyone else are the problem. Anyway, I'm not going to get deep into this topic, but just thought that once again I'll point out an obvious fact.

As far as (rhythmic) radio goes, going all around and seeing how everyone else is complaining about their cities only makes me even more thankful to be where I am today. Who would've thought that Phoenix would have better programmed rhythmics than many other places? Many times, if it's not for me, no one even talks about our rhythmics because seemingly no one really has anything to complain about, and when I do bring it up, it's normally me bringing POSITIVE statements! I mean... Atlanta is very good when it comes to Urban Radio, which was pretty much as close to rhythmic you could've gotten for many years there, but I grew up with and always loved the rhythmic sound, even during the years I lived in Atl. WBTS and WWWQ started out sounding pretty decent, but...... Thankfully, ever since I've returned to Phoenix, Phoenix rhythmics improved drastically and there is now more rhythmic sounds to choose from. I never thought i'd say this, but.... I even like it here in Az more than L.A. now! The holiday mixes... all weekend party mix weekends all summer long... good on air personalities.... we've pretty much got it made for the most part, even on the latin rhythm station! It's just too bad that Energy 92.7/101.1 is gone, but the Classic Hip Hop station that replaced the dance station - you can't even complain about that either! I wasn't too happy with MOViN's decision to go pop rock, or HOT AC as they call it, but I could understand that maybe it made sense to not try to be another rhythmic, even if it was AC. Too bad their ratings fell back down after they left the rhythmic side :( but they are still pretty good though.

Anyway, best of luck to Cincinnati. I'm going to go check out what Hot 102.9 is playing before I make any direct comments on the station.

It's a rhythmic that leans urban. I am a bit disappointed no one in Az is playing the Ciara record, but I'm sure somebody will get on it soon, especially the version that I like, which is also more appropriate for the direction music is headed in these days.

Anyway, like I said, Hot 102.9 leans more to the urban side. Quite a few of the rhythmic hits I love are missing, but then again, I've always liked and preferred the rhythmic sound that is used to target the hispanic demographics. It's unfortunate though that American urbans and rhythmics can't operate the way European rhythmics and urbans do. I am a variety and uptempo kind of guy...
