Hot 105.7

The two JSJ's you had a website for are not from WLAN-FM or HOT 105 or Z-107 (briefly). But, the JSJ you are wondering about still resides in the Lancaster Co. area. Does that clear it up for you?

PAradiovet, was your wife also involved in radio?

To PARADIOVET and STEELROCKER. Thanks so much for the assistance. I use to go to Elizabethtown College and was on the college station there as well as WPDC/WRKZ interning. I use to ALWAYS listen to him on FM97 and actually looked upon him as a mentor and one of the reasons I got into radio was I wanted to sound like him and be as good. Absolutely fantastic delivery, announciation, tone, personality. When I left and moved back, I lost touch and always wondered where he ended up. Definitely one of the best jocks I ever heard. Googled around trying to find info, but the only thing I could find was those two links. Thanks again for all the help. Happy holidays!

SteelRocker....

....yes....and actually...she -still- is...

if you are trying to figure out my identity....the initials at the end of my first post should be a huge clue..

radio chuck....you are very welcome....

also..

happy holidays to all!

PARadiovet....since I moved away in 1996, I wasn't sure if she was or not. I've known G. for many years, but not because of broadcast radio. Good to hear you're still around and knew you guys were good friends back in those days.

no problem......radio is like the mafia...every time you try to get away...it sucks you back in!!

f..y..i...jsj and i share the same birthday.....

guess which one is older...

SteelRocker...so where are you now?

paradiovet, well, lets see, Dec. 18 is his b-day and always write that in their Christmas card, but I'll guess that he's older than you by a couple of years. Haven't seen him since the "mullet" came off. I now live in the Pittsburgh area. Left Lancaster in 1996 and was in San Jose, CA for 3 years before moving back to PA in 1999. Been here ever since, but have family in Columbia and Millersville, so we come back several times a year.

Happy belated b-day there MM.

PAradiovet, send me an email at [email protected] sometime. I will continue the discussion privately if you'd like. I believe we met at JSJ's for a Christmas/b-day party when you were all at HOT too. Just put something in the subject line so I know its you.

<<I think that Cadillac was named the "Party Pig.">>

fulmer was a classic car buff.......he owned many beauties...

and if my memory serves me right...

that included the "pig"...

IIRC, she was a 1977 Cadillac Eldorado, two-door convertible.

I worked for Harold Fullmer briefly in 1984-85. My first radio job. At that time he had just sold off about 25 Lehigh Valley McDonald's stores and took over what was a very successful sub franchise, "J's Steaks & Subs". He invited everyone from his radio stations, (I think he had 5 at the time) to his house in Vera Cruz for a summer picnic. Guess what was on the grill? All the McDonald's hamburgers you could eat  :D
Later that day we all rode a hayride up to "The Hangar" as it was known. It was an airplane hangar converted being used as a garage for his classic cars. Inside there were many classic cars, including Rolls Royces. Someone from the crowd asked how many Rolls Royces he had, and his reply was, "About two dozen, I think".
Another quick Harold story. We had a going away party for an employee that was leaving the company, (I won't say who). The party was at the Hotel Traylor in Allentown in one of the ballrooms. For those that don't know, Harold was a fairly large man. I don't know if he still is. Anyway, at this rather elegant get-together, this employee that's leaving stands up and gives a little speech about thanking Harold for the opportunity, blah blah blah. Harold was sitting in a big leather captain's chair at the head of the table. He goes to stand up to shake the employee's hand, and this captain's chair sticks right to his backside! The arm rests of the chair were wrapped around his waistline. Harold was great a guy about it. He laughed right along with the crowd. It was so cool to see a multi-millionaire humbled by such a moment.
Harold had many shortcomings when it came to owning radio stations, but deep down he is a very genuine man.
BTW, I have some history on that reel-to-reel automation system previously written about in an earlier post. If it's the one I think it is, it's origin can be traced back to WXKW-FM in the late 70's early 80's. What is now B-104 in Allentown used to be an automated easy listening and country station in the late 70's to early 80's. When they went to Lite 104, they sold the system to Harold. He used it for a country format at WSAN/WXKW 1470-AM in the mid 80's. From there it went to WMGH/WLSH in Lansford. I think it spent about 10-12 years there for Mick Hagerty, who LOVED automation thanks to his Drake-Chenault (sp?) days at WLEV. From there I think he shipped it to York. Meanwhile, back at WMGH, he had an enigineer rig a home made automation system using store bought CD changers. He knew how to save a buck or two  :-[

i heard that mcdonalds --made-- him sell the stores back to them....because he was a little too good at saving a buck....in that he wouldn't renovate the locations according to the contract he had with the parent company...

then look at his other businesses....the sub shops and radio stations..all ended up on the crap heap....

i think mr. fulmer confused being lucky with being smart...

Plenty of truth about what you write PARADIOVET. McDonald's did force his hand, not absolutely certain the reasons why. I do know that he was doing some things with his stores that corporate did not like. For example, he built a miniature golf course behind the location on MacArthur Rd. in Whitehall. He called it "McGolf". He used store employees in their McDonald's uniforms to work the golf course, and sold that infamous McDonald's orange drink at the golf course. He went a step further by having a "moonbounce" balloon constructed in the image of a Big Mac and placed it in the parking lot.
Harold made his money in the early 80's when interest rates came down and real estate boomed. Then came his business ventures. His biggest fault is managing other businesses like McDonald's stores. He took McDonald's theories on selling hamburgers and applied them to selling radio spots. Not a good combo.

i agree with you....

i always felt that he ran wqxa - a radio station - like it was a real estate property.

when rust owned it....sure the place looked like a dump....but it sounded pretty good...enough so that rust sold it to hal for millions...

fulmer probably figured....slap some paint on it and it would be worth even more...

it didn't work out that way...

listeners don't care what the building looks like...

i don't want to give the impression that was stingy all the time....

i once talked him into giving me 25k to giveaway in an on air promotion....

it didn't really help in the ratings..but he took a chance...i appreciated that...more than he'll ever know..

fulmer was thinking with a real estate mind...for a business that thrives on theatre of the mind..

its been fun to remember the old days...

you know...

i once worked with a gw who has been in lebanon for years....

Sorry, I'm a different guy. The only time I've ever been in Lebanon was about 3 weeks ago when I ate at the Golden Corral....Now THAT'S GOOD EATS!!!! ;D

I'm thinking I have a clue as to your identity since I do recognize those initials from this station some time ago (am I on the right track?)

I admit that I was always partial to Mark Feather. He tried to buy a stereo system at Hess's (oh, goodness am I dating myself?) in York and it wasn't in stock. He offered to come to my store in Harrisburg to pick it up. When the girl in York told me the name to put on the system I stammered, "you don't mean the guy on 105.7 do ya? I love him!" So I put extra effort into prepping his stereo and he left a special thank you note for me that I received the next day. You know, I'm pretty sure I still have that note!

Finally met him in person a few months later at the Harrisburg Post Office on tax deadline night. He was battling WINK's Little Joe Frisco in the Big Yellow Boom Box. I never had so much fun sending envelopes to the IRS! I admit that I wonder about where both of them ended up as I was a fan of both! ::)

yes.....

last i heard about m.f. (as i prefer to call him).....

he was gaining weight as fast as he was losing hair in Denver.....but that was many....many moons ago.

Mark Feather's submission from his days working at HITS Magazine:

it’s off to the World Famous San Diego Zoo to party Sunday away. DJ Susan Morabito will be on the tables making it hot from 4-11pm. Finally, for those in attendance who don’t have to work on Monday like myself, trust—there are several choices of places to party ‘til the sun dawns on a new week. Look for me with my hottie, Xavier (Latin, 23 years old, ex go-go boy—yum!), in tow throughout the weekend. Can’t wait to see him again, as he was about the ONLY good thing that happened to me during my eight months in that freakin’ dust bowl known as Albuquerque, NM! (Mark Feather)
