HOT 105.9 To Become Rock Station?

I've heard that the area's primary (only?) commercial hip-hop and R&B station, 105.9 is undergoing a format change--and will likely be broadcasting rock within a few days. This would essentially leave WORT and WSUM as the only remaining radio outlets for hip-hop* in Dane County. If you go to the station's website**, it no longer displays programming info for Hot 105.9, instead displaying "UNDER CONTSTRUCTION - CHECK BACK SOON!" ...

WKPO is currently playing different types of songs along with teasers promising "a new station" will launch at 10AM this Saturday (10/13). The liners are supposed to leave listeners (and other station managers) guessing as to what it will be. The liners mention it could be "US 105.9" (which leads into a country song), or "105.9 Kiss FM" (which leads into CHR), or even "Halleujiah 105.9" (which leads into Christian/gospel).

Re: HOT 105.9 To Become Rock Station? The Hog

My guess would be Classic Rock as "105.9 The Hog" I decied to do a domain search of all the names they're saying the station could be and the only one that fit was www.1059thehog.com. Here is the WhoIs for it:

http://who.godaddy.com/WhoIs.aspx?domain=1059thehog.com&prog_id=godaddy

The site was registered on January 6th, 2007 by Craig Karmazin, or other words Good Karma Broadcasting. I guessed classic rock because they played Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd after they said "It could be 105-9 The Hog."

That's EXACTLY what the new format is: 105-9 The Hog. The launch occurred at 10AM this morning, with a promise of "Everything that rocks" and "Bob and Brian" in the morning (just like Hog in Milwaukee). "You Shook Me All Night Long" by AC/DC was the very first song. (New logo at http://www.wkpo.com)

For those of you that are not familiarly with how Craig Karmazin operates, this change in format is typical if how he likes to run his stations. I keep very close watch in the ratings for the top 25 radio stations in Madison and all of Craig’s stations tank in the ratings. 100.5 was doing very well a few years ago when they had Howard on in the morning and then Don & Mike on in the afternoon. They he tries to make WTLX an all sports station, aka “Fox Sports radio”. All of Craig’s stations suck in the ratings. Summer ratings for Good Karmas stations, WKPO-FM = 1.7, WBEV-AM = 0.5 and WTLX = 0.0 so it did not even make the top 25 in Madison!!!

They only good thing on 105.9 line up is Bob and Brain in the morning. They are worth listing to, better then any other morning show broadcasted in the Madison area. And for other morning shows in Madison, Johnny & Greg suck big time and need to go away. On other thing that would help 105.9 is if they put Don and Mike on in the afternoon drive time slot. That would be a very smart move.

Don’t get too used the new line up, Craig will change it up in 3 years or less. It is what he does. Craig is just a radio CEO that was handed a sliver spoon as a kid, and don’t think his dad has never backed him up in any way. Just read this quote on OnMilwaukee.com from Craig.

“My dad greatly plays into this. He is currently the CEO of Sirius Satellite Radio. He had managed and grown Infinity Broadcasting, had run CBS and Viacom, and he's a great mentor and person I can lean on. How he doesn't fit into the business is that he's not involved in any way financially, management-wise, decision making, or in any other way.”

Craig’s dad not financially involved in any was is a bold face lie!! Trust me I know. Craig is all about him self and could care less about is listening audience. So get used to it

DON’T TRUST CRAIG KARMAZIN!!!

Just a couple of things I noticed during my drive today:
(1) With Bob & Brian now on 105.9, sister station WTLX has dropped that show and now airs Fox Sports Radio programming in the morning drive.
(2) I noticed 105.9 is now ID'ing themselves as WHGG (if I heard the voiceover correctly). Can anyone confirm if this call change is now FCC official, or if it will be official after the holiday? (It's not in the FCC's FM database as of yet, while their AM database shows it's on a non-com in Kingsport, TN.)

Ok, I got this bit of info from some people on the Bob & Brian show. “the switch to that stations was supposed to give Madison better coverage”. Ok this makes no bit of sense.

Let’s review, Bob & Brian have been on WTLX for two years or more and have gained a nice fan base in the WTLX broadcasting area. WTLX did not have a strong single that made it into the Madison area. If you were on the north/east side of Madison you might get it in. If you were in DeForest, Sun Prairie and north up towards Columbus and Beaver Dam you defiantly would get the station in because I believe the radio tower was just west of Columbus. So you have a morning show on your station that has a nice fan base and then move them to another station. At first this might not sound like a bad idea because they were trying to gain a bigger audience in the Madison area. Only one problem, 105.9 does not broadcast into area were Bob & Brian were once heard!!! So you just switch the show to a different station and end up losing your entire old fan base? How is this a logical move?? ??? I can hardly get 105.9 to come in and I’m in the Deforest area and that is not that far from Madison.

Hip-hop Format Out At Hot 105.9'

The Capital Times :: FRONT :: A1

The Madison area is losing its only full-time hip-hop station effective at 10 a.m. today, as WKPO/FM 105.9 ("Hot 105.9") abandons the format.

Station general manager Keith Williams said Friday that ratings for Hot 105.9 were decent, getting 1.7 percent of 12-and-older listeners in last summer's Arbitron rankings, good for 16th place. He added that the station's fan base was unwaveringly loyal and vocal in their support.

The problem was that the station, owned by Beaver Dam-based Good Karma Broadcasting, couldn't attract enough advertising revenue.

"We're all personally attached to it," Williams said of the hip-hop format. "It was just not supported by the advertising community to the level that we need it to be to continue operating in the format." ...

roboto's response to HOT 105.9 format change

originally posted in the forums, by roboto:

Absolutely ridiculous.

Madison was so far behind the rest of the country in the early 90's when hip hop (rap actually) was still relevant and good (for the most part). When 105.9 came around in about 2000 it was a welcome change for people like me; male minorities living in Madison. Finally, we had someone out there appealing to us, albeit about 10 years behind the rest of the country. Another problem was it barely registered since the airwaves were stretched all the way to Rockford. (It was doomed anyway).

Now, the crap they played at 105.9 wasn't really hip hop (especially the last couple years) , it was 'hip pop'. But at least it represented the commercial segment of the culture, and had an audience that is part of a growing demographic in Dane county. To continually ignore this group, and shut down all outlets for promoting this hip hop culture, shows how small minded and non-cosmopolitan this city truly is. To use NAS's song 'hip hop is dead' as a ways of spreading this message shows how little these assholes at the station understood the culture they were selling. ...

“Ratings for Hot 105.9 were, decent, getting 1.7 percent of 12 and older”

Good ratings with a 1.7??? They call that good ratings?? What is Keith Williams smoking those ratings suck!!

The numbers were good considering that 105.9's signal sucks through many portions of Madison and that they ran a format that, overall, had no real competition in the market.

Now that they're with a format that's being duplicated more or less on two different stations with city grade signals, their numbers will be worse if not non-existant...in both Madison and Rockford. The station should do well in Janesville, but that's about it.

Apollo7979, good point about the numbers. I did not think of it that way.

What I don't get is why they moved the morning show from WTLX/100.5 to WKPO/105.9 so it would get better coverage in Madison. Just like you said, 105.9's signal sucks through many portions of Madison. Unless Good Karma Broadcasting has plans to improve the single for the Madison area it sounds like they just flat out lied to the Bob and Brian show when they told them 105.9 covered Madison better. I can’t believe this is how C.K. runs his stations. ::)

'Rome' Good Enough For TV, Just Not HBO

High on "The Hog"? Good Karma Broadcasting switched formats for 105.9 FM, and it only had to change one letter to do it. The former "Hot 105.9" hip-hop station became "The Hog" at 10 a.m. Saturday, playing an all-rock format that mixes classic rock of yesteryear (Aerosmith, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin) with mainstream rock of today (Pearl Jam, Green Day).

The station will officially change its call letters on Wednesday from WKPO to WHGG. ...

I think the change is awesome. I came down from Milwaukee and I believe Bob and Brian to be the best talk show hosts I've ever heard. I can relate to them. I live in northern illinois now and all the other hosts are so immature, especially their humor. WKPO must have had bad marketers. 102.9 the hog does not have that problem. They are excellent at marketing. I'm glad to see B & B making an excellent name for themselves. I can finally listen to them loud and clear without having to use their website. I live 45 minutes away from Janesville and it comes in fine. I love it. I've been blessed. I am not a big fan of rock but I enjoy my morning show once again. Finally.
They must be doing something right if they can be heard throughout most of the state and online.

Regarding the format change, it had to be sooner or later. The station might do a heck of a lot better selling rock vs. hip hop. Just my take...

A Tale of Two Radio Stations

While this is old news by now, and Southern Wisconsin's residents are no doubt becoming accustomed to a rap-less radio format, it's surprising to me how little farewell Hot 105.9 received, even from Madison's hip hop community, especially in light of the recent attempted axing of the The Mic 92.1. As a point of disclosure, I must admit that I worked with the station as an independent promoter and live event dj while. They co-sponsored the "Hip Hop Generation , Hip Hop as a Movement" conferences and supported other events locally. Here are my thoughts on the loss of the station and what it means for the Madison music scene. The Mic 92.1-I often used to listen to the Mic 92.1 at my horrific lab job. Boring, Preachy, just anti-right, and not pro left anything. Pretty alienating to a left leaning person of color, not to mention the whitest radio station I'd ever heard in my life. It was the kind of self-congratulatory talk radio that didn't spark what the right wing shows do, anger or emotion. The Mic was just blah and whining, Take it or let it alone. ...

I like Bob and Brain, but I would not go as far as saying they are the “best” show hosts. Bob and Brain have nothing on Don & Mike out of D.C. If you never heard of “The Don and Mike show” check them out on the net. They are the best talk radio show I have ever heard.

I’m glad that Bob and Brian are still broadcasted in Madison…well some what broadcasted in Madison. I can tell you this, you can’t get them in DeForest and most to the north side of Madison but I know they are coming in great towards Janesville.

Just once when I find something I like to listen to on the radio, I wish it would stick around for more then 2 or 3 years. Every time I find something I like, it either gets pulled off the air, or the stations switches formats or they move everything to another station that I can get in were I live or work. IMO, there is nothing good on the air in Madison anymore. :( :-\

BTW, Don and Mike used to be on 100.5 WTLX and it was one of the stations highest rated shows but this still did not stop Craig Karmazin from pull their show off the air.

FYI: WTLX has never done good in the ratings, even with Stern. Around that time, they had an overall rating around half a point.

I don't have daypart or demo breakdowns, but with an overall like that, they couldn't have been good.

Must be that Flato show or something.

They are working the FCC to allow a transmitter move into Dane County, so we'll see.
