Hot 106 vs. Jam'n 94.5

I often listen to Jam'n 94.5 and sometimes to Hot 106. Is it me or does Hot 106 sound very amatuerish or like a college station compared to Jam'n 94.5? I notice a distinct difference in the presentation of each station. Jam'n sounds much more well presented. The personalties are more entertaining and sound more professional (as far as hip-hop stations go), the imaging sounds more creative, and most importantly, the music has far greater variety than Hot 106 including some old school jams throughout the day. It seems like Hot 106 is scared to play any old school outside of the Lunchtime Rewind. This is surprising because Hot 106 (formerly KIX 106) has been around longer than Jam'n and is a heritage station to many. It was the first hip-hop station in the local area. Then in the mid 90's Jam'n came along and ever since I thought they always sounded better. Also, with a clear signal in most of Rhode Island, Jam'n was and is an easy alternative to Hot 106. What do you think about these two stations?

I think the same can be said about any Boston station compared to Providence. Just like any profession, most of the real pros go to the big show, Providence is amateur hour compared to Boston.

In some cases yes and in some cases no. Most of the other Providence stations other than Hot 106 sound pretty good for a market in the 30s. I actually think that 94HJY has a more professional sound than 104.1 WBCN. It seems like Hot 106 has been the throw-away station in the Citadel Providence cluster, much like Z100 and the Hawk were back a few years ago. Fun 107 sounds much more professional than Hot 106, in that the station has great energy and there's no gaps or dead air. There have been many times where on Hot 106, they let the song fade out too long before finally playing the next song/playing the bumper, etc. I'd actually consider 95.5 WBRU to be more professional sounding than Hot 106.

HJY is the only station I have ever heard play old bits over and over so heavily.
What other morning shows replay their old bits so frequently?

Only stations where the talent has become incredibly Lazy and the PD doesn't care.

The secret to HJY is to change nothing other than the inevitable staff changes that have occurred recently. They're a haven for listeners who want the same thing over and over but that group is rapidly aging out of any preferred demo.It happened in a different way with B101 and it will happen with HJY and when it does there will be an awful lot of disoriented bikers around the state. They're growing old with their audience and within five years you'll see changes.Programmerwise it's a stepping stone to bigger things as I'm sure the programming challenges aren't there when you're faced with just repeating what was done last year at the same time.
