HOT 107.7 in ATL

This morning "Birmingham's New #1 for R&B Hits" was blazin into ATL. I live in Lithonia,GA (East ATL Suburb) and they were pumping in FM stereo in the house and car. "The HOT Wake Up Show" sounded pretty decent. I know most folks say they should flip to a hip-hop/R&B format, but from what I heard I don't agree. Most R&B stations these days try to combo Todays R&B with Classic Soul which I personally don't like, but HOT 107.7's Hot Urban AC sound is nice. Maybe Citadel could launch an urban or rhythmic to combo HOT 107.7.

I'd imagine "Hot 107-7" would actually do well in Atlanta--it'd at least be a better foe for V-103 than 97.1 Jamz currently is.

Just goes to show ya- Hot gets hammered hard on the Bama boards (not as hard as does the X, though), and someone gets hooked from outside the market. Is the grass greener on the other side of the fence? Or do a few nay-sayers like to just be negative about everything thread that is posted?

Well, you kinda stumbled on the answer to your own question. Most of the board members here are angry at Citadel for letting The X go downhill and instead of fixing it, pushing it aside for a new format. The X, not too many years ago, was a force in Birmingham and most of the state for that matter, due to its massive signal and an excellent team behind the boards.

It was perfect chemistry.

It was a great station: quite possibly, as far as that chemistry went, one of the top ten or fifteen in Birmingham, all time.

Citadel comes along, buys out Dick, and the bottom falls out.

You'd be angry too.
______________

It is no worse than Dick buying WENN 107.7 and putting them on that crappy 1.4kw 105.9 signal. WENN was one of the great heritage stations of all time in B'ham.

Amen to that. No offense the X listeners, but 107.7 was a heritage Urban for some 30 years before Dick Broadcasting came in and screwed up the picture. All Dick had to do with the X @ 105.9 was did what Clear Channel recently did with the frequency, and that's applied for a CP and move the signal. Now because of those morons all we have nowadays here in B'ham is Jamz, Kiss, and Hot, and the only one that isn't lame as burnt toast is Kiss.
______________

Angry isn't the word or words that describes my feelings towards Citadel's questionable choices about not fixing The X and put it on 100.5, then replacing it with a waterdown format and killing the old X's montsterous coverage in the process. I haven't felt this way since Comcast decided to buy out TechTV in March 2004, merged it with that horrible G4TV channel to create G4TechTV, and in nine months basically kill the name and the brand of TechTV and the United States channel becomes G4TV (except in Canada which I think is still G4TechTV through another ownership or something like that).

I find it strange that one month after G4TechTV become G4TV, The X started to air those "The X is Moving" ads. So two things I used to love were to be gone after April.

My point is that whenever some big shot company buys out something that was successful with the previous owners, they manage to screw it over and all the hard work build into making something a success goes down the toliet.

Well, all I got left to listen is 106.9 The Eagle, which by the way hasn't yet to annoy me as WTAK usually does even though it more of a cookie cutter station than WTAK is but that's for another time.

That would be a sad story...if it were true.

Dick Broadcasting never owned WENN.

Hah. Sorry

No, it was Southern Star Communications, a division of Capstar Communications.

That's all codename for CLEAR CHANNEL.

Clear Channel bought the station from Booker T. Washington Broadcasting (A.G. Gaston). They made a swap deal with Dick Broadcasting to move WENN to 105.9 and move WRAX to 107.7.

So if you wanna blame anybody...blame Clear Channel. Of course, you wouldn't be the first person blaming them for the dismantling of a radio market.
______________

I'm not sure if that's entirely true, depending on which WENN you're referring to. It's sort of confusing because there are multiple WENN's now (at 107.7, 105.9 and now 105.5) and three WRAX's (105.9, 107.7, and now 100.5).

I've kept newspaper clippings during that time about radio stations being sold, format changes, and I have one from the Birmingham News dated in late '99 where it says that Dick Broadcasting did purchase WENN in 1997 (the article is about WENN at 105.9, but I'm assuming the sale is referring to WENN at 107.7). The article does say that Dick Broadcasting switched the two stations' frequencies (107.7 and 105.9) following the sale.

I figure that WENN (at 107.7) had to be owned by Dick Broadcasting at one time because the station at 107.7 (now WUHT) is currently owned by Citadel, which bought out all the other Dick Broadcasting properties (WYSF, WAPI, WZRR) years ago. Also, I have a two radio directories dating back to '98 and '99, respectively, which state that WRAX (the old WENN at 107.7) was owned by Dick Broadcasting. It also indicates that WENN (at 105.9) was owned by American General Media, but managed by Dick Broadcasting. I don't have any type of newspaper articles regarding Clear Channel ever buying WENN (at 107.7)from Booker T. Washington Group.

That's because they didn't buy it from them, or for that matter from Dick. AGM sold WENN 105.9 to CC sometime in 2001.

Capstar/CC never owned 107.7.

Yep..it's all sort of muddy, but it's beginning to finally make sense. Clear Channel never was involved with WENN at 107.7, just 105.9.

Dick Broadcasting really just wanted to move the intellectual property from WRAX at 105.9 (which it managed) to the stronger signal on 107.7. Seems as though it wasn't too long after WENN was moved to 105.9, that Dick Broadcasting bailed out and decided not to renew their contract with AGM, so AGM had to go out and find someone to either manage or buy the station. Didn't WENN go off the air for a while? That must be around the time CC came on the scene. Can't remember if they just managed WENN and later bought it, or just outright bought it, though.

Didn't Cox buy WENN when it was on 107.7 and had to sell it because it would have been a monopoly owning KISS and JAMZ? I thought they owned it for a short time and then had to sell it to Dick who managed it for American General Media.

Yes. I had forgotten about that, but I did find some info on where Cox was going to buy WENN, that was in '97. Seems as though the FCC never approved it, though, and that the people at WENN looked to Dick Broadcasting to buy it instead.
