Hot 107.9 philly drop Rickey Smiley

They need to go off the air. Radio One has been trying to push that guy on Philly for years. The Beat and WRNB audiences kept saying they don't want his show, but Hughes kept trying to find ways to get him on the air here. Now she sees what a failure he is outside of Atlanta.

They also tried various local hosts, but she needs to realize Philly's Urban audience is a special breed, much like Philly sports fans.

They need to nurture local talent and stop bringing in out-of-towners, former R&B and Rap people and syndicated shows. This may take years, considering the state of radio, but if they're gonna have any chance, they need to try.

Also, they need to start supporting local artists over outsiders, when both acts are in the beginnings of their careers. Stop with the "This is HOT!!! in [ you name the city ]", and start with what's hot here.

Agree. Rickey Smiley said on Twitter it was due to bad signal and ratings that took him off but I'm hearing Unclt O of formerly Power 99. Is joining the station he said he'll be back real soon hmm?

See, that's the problem with Urban radio in philly. They keep recycling the same OLD people from Power 99's heyday of the 90's. WRNB/The Beat/WDAS-FM have all tried bringing back those hacks, and they never pull the numbers they did back then.

No one wated Carter & Sanborn on WDAS-FM, but they tried. Uncle O and the other 2 guys he was with on WUSL have been given chance after chance on Radio One stations in the last 10 years, and they don't last. STOP THE MADNESS!!!!!!!

Uncle O never been on radio one stations. But come on getting rid of Rickey smiley & uncle o firing coincidence? Plus radio one need to add more new music same old throwbacks plus current smh lol

i think he may have worked for 93.9 WKYS in dc

well, Uncle O and the 2 he worked with at Power have been on the air far too long, considering the lack of influence they have, or should i say lack of positive influence, because only negative people seem attracted to them.

I still say that philly radio has been dying a slow death because those on the air won't pass the torch. All they want is to keep their spot or syndicate so they can keep others out.

Reminder: Middays on HOT 107.9 are syndicated out of Atlanta. Afternoons on POWER 99 are syndicated out of Jacksonville,FL. Go Figure!

You can blame Syndication One for that. Ever since Radio One created that division, they eliminated the local morning programs in Atlanta, Dallas and Baltimore and replaced them with Rickey Smiley on their properties. Dallas was a special case because Rickey Smiley was originally local on KBFB for four years before he inked that deal and moved to Atlanta's WHTA. They had Russ Parr and Steve Harvey (via simulast of KKBT in Los Angeles) before him. While Atlanta and Dallas still have a choice for local radio on one other hip hop competitor, Baltimore does not since sole station WERQ had Mark Clark, and nearby DC doesn't count.

In the case of Houston and Columbus, both got it made with their local AM Drives.

Doesn't 107.9 cover the entire City and County of Philadelphia though, if not the surrounding counties or Camden?
