Hot 1340 the groove?

Are we all talking about the same radio station? I'll admit I haven't tuned in lately (and keep forgetting every time I'm in the car) but Hot 1340 The Groove was the old KTOW out of Sand Springs, right?

OKCRadioGuy, were you saying 890 / WLS (as in the talk station) out of Chicago does a music show Saturday nights... and 96.5... wouldn't that be Tulsa's Mix 96, which runs The Retro Pop Reunion Saturday nights, I think (again, haven't listened in a while)...

I'm so confused!

Also, if Sand Springs / 1340 has gone to sports, which network is left after ESPN & Fox both being taken by ClearChannel (1300 & 1430)?

Either you're confused, or I'm confused... or maybe both of us are confused! :p

Now THAT'S interesting! The programming here sounded local... with what you're saying, though, I wonder if they were networked?

OK, now I HAVE to listen to Sand Springs! :D Thanks for the clarification!

Sorry, I should have mentioned that in the initial post. I was talking about KJMU 1340 Sand Springs/Tulsa.

For one the station was called the Groove 1340, the spanish side of the station was caliente...they signed off aka stopped paying the bill in 2000, right when wild 97.9 went on air...but two of the Groove Jocks now run, Classic Soul Saturday on AM 890/FM 96.5 at 2pm till sign off, good soul for your earhole! Also, Johnny Soul does a gospel show on Sunday afternoons...Vernon campbell occassionally makes some appearances. Still, most of the jocks from the station stay in contact with each other.

Sand Springs' 1340 appears to still be Hot 1340 based on a sweeper I heard in the middle of a stopset...

They still have little to no audio processing, making it hard to hear clearly unless you're up against the tower. Something to add some density to that signal could give it at least a little penetration into Tulsa. As it is, I'm aware of the signal from north of Owasso through Tulsa, but it's not really clear much of anywhere... the noise level is just too high to comfortably make out what's on the air.

Having said that, I DID fight through the noise both this morning and this afternoon to try to figure out what they're doing these days.

This morning, about 9:15, they were running an M.L.K. Jr. special (possibly the same one K-Jamz 105 was running at the same time!). This afternoon during the 3 o clock hour they had "The Afternoon Ride" with Doug & Dee Dee, apparently satellite & while I heard local commercials the only local ID I heard was in the middle of a stopeset so it makes me think they don't have the triggers set up. (I didn't get to hear a legal ID, so I don't know how that's working.)

The music I heard during "The Afternoon Ride" sounded to my ears more like Urban AC than dusties, because while I didn't hear a lot I recognized as current, I didn't hear the avalanche of 70s that I usually hear on Urban oldies. It certainly didn't sound "hot" to me, but perhaps it wasn't representative of what they're doing other times?

This afternoon the levels sounded OK (just uncompressed), but this afternoon the levels were absolutely too hot. I couldn't tell if it was the board being set too high, or somebody boosted the bass eq, because it seemed to be only on the bass notes that it was really "crunching".... At the same time, I could hear a little stress even when the DJs were talking... so the whole thing was set to high, likely to try to make up for the lack of processing.

I have to wonder what happened to the local guys... likely the owners figured out satellite was cheaper than having to pay staff... the bad thing about that is without local involvement or interaction, I'm not convinced there's a lot to listen for... add distortion and then having to fight over the noise to listen... I think they've got a tough road ahead of them.

I was amused to find a MySpace page for them, but it hadn't been updated since June... for whatever that tells you...

OKCRadioGuy, it's a bet I'd take! Their studios are still out in the industrial park in Sand Springs next to the waste water management plant. It would take an awful lot of money to make that fallout shelter look like THAT. Like, you'd have to add some windows, 'n stuff. :)

Their nighttime programming continues to be what sounds like Winamp without the crossfader, although at least the levels seem right. I actually heard a promo for the syndicated afternoon show with the obligatory silence between it and the song before it and the song after it... still, it was a promotional item so I was impressed.

...I SWEAR, though, I'm gonna buy them a little dbx 160A just to get them a LITTLE compression... the constant fading into the noise floor drives me CRAZY!
