amfmsw says "I would rather be at 1.5kw at 800' than 3.3kw at 300' anyday! That's a huge increase in coverage"
BTW, this is Cumulus' WWKL(FM)/Palmyra we're talking about. Huge increase? Not really. Go to the comparative coverage maps at radio-locator.com and you'll see what they did. Yes, it got them further from distant small-town Palmyra and puts a strong signal into large-town Harrisburg--and that's what they were shooting for. The station is currently 7th (12+) in Harrisburg--not bad for a Class A, though there's a logjam ahead of them: 4 Class B FMs, entrenched rocker TPA, and The Big 580.
Technically, is this a jump from the old standard 3-kw Class A to a 6-kw Class A? Could be; my engineer's hat has gotten dusty. But an A is an A. And an A ain't a B.
I don't dispute the general wisdom of the move. Higher is better. Closer is better. But is this a "huge increase" in coverage. No, sir, it's not. Worth the investment. Yeah... probably... in time.
