HOT 93.5 Sudbury

It's a shame to see what has happened to radio news in Sudbury. CIGM is gone, and CBC made cutbacks earlier this year at their station in Sudbury, which covers a vast territory in Northern Ontario.

If St. John and Moncton, New Brunswick each can support both their own CBC Radio station AND a private news/talk station, I'm sure Sudbury can as well.

They're still simulcasting on 790. I actually enjoyed "kung pao" radio for the brief time it was on. I still think the flip to FM was stupid...I'd like to see permanent simulcasts like they do in other countries.

Pheeew, glad we left Sudbury. Another CHR, eh? How exciting is that?

790 really wasn't much of a news station or anything...old school CW during the day, followed by ESPN in the evenings. We lived in Sudbury for only a year, so I don't know much about the history, but like so many 'local' AM stations, it had probably become a shell of it once was. It'll now be lost in the crowded (even in Sudbury) FM band.

103.9 is owned by the same company, and hasn't been hit music for a while now.
Sorry...I think I missed your point.

Not a fan of CHR in general, as I enjoy music which has a life span longer than 6 weeks. :O

And I couldn't tell you specifically whether Sudbury already had an CHR or not, as my dial never strayed much from Radio 2 or Espace Musique, while up there. However, I figured the CHR duties were split between Big Daddy, Q92, EZ Rock and Le Loup. Now it's all in one nice tidy package, I suppose...

Regarding the Kung Pao stunting. Were they really playing Chinese pop? My wife and the 400 or so Chinese students at Laurentian certainly would've gotten a kick out of it (making up for the complete lack of decent Chinese groceries in town). LOL!

Based on what I heard on 790 AM, it was mostly Classical Chinese music, with a few pop hits thrown in. It was very pretty music, and honestly if they would have stayed with that format permanently, I would have set a preset on my radio for it.

That's actually pretty cool.

Touching on China it-self for a moment...with the opening up of things over there, there's a lot more variety (and numbers) in terms of radio stations in China. But trying to find one (online at least) which plays the traditional forms of 'classical' Chinese music is a challange, as many play 'western' pop or their own brand of pop...which is basically western pop with Manderin lyrics. Another case of 'more is less' I'm afraid.

Interesting Opinion, but to say so respectfully, wouldn't it make more money in Toronto on AM 1430 or one of the other multicultural outlets there?

I think it would, but I've noticed when 1430 has it's Cantonese and Mandarin programming, what musice they do play is very contemporary. Mostly current pop hits. I actually do have 1430 as a preset on 2 of my radios. With only 0.5% of Sudbury residents being of Chinese origin, (according to a stat I saw on radiowest.com) I doubt there'd be much chance of any revenue.

Obviously it wouldn't fly in Sudbury, but I think Fairchild could make a go of it in Ottawa, with a pattern thrown out towards Montreal maybe? (Isn't there a nice empty slot just recently vacated on the AM band in Ottawa?) 1430 actually throws a pretty good day time signal up to north eastern Ontario. Certainly listenable between Sudbury and Pembroke...even for a wife who hates static!

The current Chinese programming on CHIN Ottawa is pretty lame and too scattered (according to my wife). Discussions about proper cell phone use in Cantonese one day, followed in Manderin the next day with a very pro-Sinhalses (and therefore pro-China) view on the recent events in Sri Lanka. I kind of miss the old programming, at least you got an hour of rather nice Chinese music, before the CRI propaganda machine started up...and you knew what you were getting!

I think CHIN Ottawa does a pretty crappy job overall. The foreign language programming on the campus stations CKCU and CHUO is better. I still have serious issues with CKCU's Spanish Language show on Friday Afterno0ns. All of Toronto's Ethnic broadcasters are so much better in all aspects and all but 1320 CJMR are easily heard here at night. Montreal's CFMB seems to have dropped their Chinese language show, which was nothing more than CRI.

For us CHIN is a novelty station, which provides generally more interesting music than other stations in the Ottawa area. But yes, as far as servicing the needs of the local communities, I suspect it's spotty, depending a lot on local community input.

As for CKCU's 'Barrio Latino', I used to listen to it often (supported them during the funding drives, as well), especially the first hour when they had a tendency to play alot of latin american music. As for content, there certainly never seemed to be a serious edge to what ever topics they were covering.

Online streaming has changed my listening habits drastically (I have an FM wireless device, which transmitts from my computer to our radios and...through out the whole neighbourhood :D) and I can listen to various sources of latin american (or Greek laiko, or cheesy German schlager, or whatever!) music.

I have been in Montreal's 'Chinatown', stores carrying Cantonese programming...do they have nothing at all anymore?

As for CJMR, I suspect you may have co-channel issues from Oldies 1310. I do hear them here, but they are getting beat up by a bunch over other signals, including adult standards (I don't think that that's WJAS Pittsburg, as they're supposed to be carrying John Tesh at this time....hmmmm, the adults standards station in Venice Florida then???)

Wow, mimo, that was a bit of a ramble on my part...must get coffee and back to work, lol!

You nailed the CJMR issue, Oldies 1310 splatters over it almost completely. Especially since it's a music station the splatter will be worse. The one spot I seem to be able to hear it is at the bus stop on Rideau street across from the Rideau Centre downtown. If i turn the radio facing southeast, all the 1310 splatter is gone revealing a pristine 1320. I do believe the standards you are hearing is still WJAS.

I will tune into Barrio Latino from time to time, but I can't stay tuned through the whole show. To0 much reggaeton during the second hour. There's no language barrier for me, and sometimes I'll also listen to Voces Latinas 1610 from Toronto or 1680 from Lindenwold, NJ. However they make me long for the Mexican AM's I used to hear in the Midwest during the early 1990's.

CHIN's Arabic program Sawt al Najoum (voice of the stars) is probably the best thing they have going, it's well produced, the music is great and people are listening. Go into many stores downtown and you'll hear it playing.

I hear a lot of pop music on the revamped Cantonese/Mandarin shows on CHIN the rare times I get to listen. I don't know how well it compares to what's being done in Toronto or Vancouver, but I'm sure some people like it. I live in Ottawa's Chinatown, but I'm usually at work when the show is on so I can't gauge whether people in the neighbourho0d are listening in the stores or the kitchens.

Ottawa's 1310 is a very odd station.
Go to Alexendria Ontario and discover that
Oshawa's 1580 CKDO comes in much clearer, depending perhaps on when you wish to tune in.

I'm just stunned that a station much closer to Alexendria is more fuzzy than a station that's not exactly close by.

Ya, that 1310 seems to be throwing a weird pattern. At night it doesn't carry well our way (Brockville area), but while we lived in Halifax, it was the strongest signal coming from Ottawa. Yet, while in Sudbury, the Ottawa signals were lousy...Winnipeg's CBW 990 usually coming in much better than anything from Ottawa.

Usually have that going in the car, while up in Ottawa in the afternoons (especially after Radio 2 goes into their 'alt country' mode). Having lived in the Middle East, I do enjoy the tunes they spin. 8)
