I haven't heard a broadcast from Club Roxy in forever. Just flipped it on Hot 95.7, and they're running it now, they said 10-2 on Fridays, then they're at Bikini Beach 10-2 on Saturdays. Anybody else catch it? Their club DJ is AMAZING.

I didn't get a chance to hear it but I'm a little confused by the choice of radio stations. I had always heard the Roxy's clientele was primarily urban on Friday and Saturday nights. Strange they would look to a station who is trying to be like KRBE to broadcast live. If that's the case why wouldn't they just use KRBE to partner with? Are they trying to turn the crowd?

Who is trying to be like KRBE? HAHAHA! That's rediculous. Hot is a CHR leaning Rhythmic, and KRBE is a pathetic excuse for a CHR leaning heavily Hot AC.

yup, agreed.

Musically...the playlist are almost identical...the only difference between HOT & KRBE is where they play the songs. A lot of the more rhythmic songs HOT plays during all dayparts, KRBE only plays in PM drive and evenings. Again, in this business you need to follow the money. KRBE is one of the top billing stations in Houston and is programmed for an older demo whereas HOT is definitely programmed to the younger demo. Which demo do you think advertisers are trying to attract and where do you think the money (advertisers) will fall. Maybe they aren't exactly alike musically but they are more similiar than different.

"KRBE is a pathetic excuse for a CHR leaning heavily Hot AC"

Different strokes for different folks but when it comes to revenue HOT will take years to catch up.

Which station would I be attracted to, as an advertiser? HOT. Why advertise on a station which the demo is growing out of, instead of a station that the demo I'd want is growing into, and will hold with?

And your theory is a little backwards. HOT isn't like KRBE but all day playlist, but mostly similar... flip it around. KRBE is like HOT at night, because it WASN'T as rhythmic at night until HOT existed.

So KRBE is like HOT at night, and Mix during the day.

It baffles me how I'll be listening to a TON of Matchbox 20, Rob Thomas, and Sheryl Crow on KRBE, then 6 hours later it's all rhythmic. Way to alienate your listeners.. woooo. ::)

ILTTR - remember...it's all about the revenue. Ratings + listeners = revenue. Why choose a station which you claim "the demo is growing out of?" Glad you asked. Let's look at the latest rankings by share for the 18-34 (your chosen demo) and 25-44 (my chosen demo). I'll even give you that it's still too early to know what HOT will actually become but just play along. Radio is not programmed for the individual, it's programmed for what most of the masses like and that in turn leads to ratings which in turn lead to revenue.
A 18-34
AM KRBE 8.7% / HOT 2.5%
MD KRBE 6.6% / HOT 3.6%
PM KRBE 5.1% / HOT 3.8%
EV KRBE 5.6% / HOT 3.9%
A 25-44
AM KRBE 7.7% / HOT 2.2%
MD KRBE 6.1% / HOT 2.1%
PM KRBE 4.9% / HOT 3.0%
EV KRBE 5.1% / HOT 3.7%

Now answer me this after reviewing the above. Does it make more sense for KRBE to become more like HOT or HOT to become more like KRBE? Remember what I said about revenue. If you don't like KRBE then that's cool (change the channel) but you have to respect what it does ranking and revenue-wise. Until HOT can move into the top 20 in revenue they must do the same. I enjoy your passion.

There are logical reasons.

You're looking at share... in this case, of course KRBE is above in Mornings at this point with no morning show launched on Hot yet (until the 21st). Then you'll see a massive increase in share due to the increased TSL. Mid-Days can be reasoned by the fact KRBE is extremely dayparted and sounds near KHMX, and is more "work-safe" than hearing rhythmic songs.

Afternoon, Nights, and the whole scope is covered under the blanket, as you had mentioned, that Hot is still in it's infancy. If you take a look at Cumulative data, Hot is not "that" far behind KRBE, and is actually over in some demographics and dayparts.

Apparently someone agrees with me, I've heard ads that Bikini Beach, Club Roxy, and Drink Houston are all on Hot now. Think outside the box and factor in the lower rates, and you'd probably not oppose advertising on Hot either, seeing it's huge growth in just the almost 4 months it's existed.

You make some very good points. Let's use your example of advertisers who are utilizing HOT. Bikini Beach...my friend at KRBE told me they were glad to see that club go as they weren't real current on their financial obligations. Club Roxy...as you stated very low cost to get them to advertise and DRINK Houston...a throw-in for the club owners as part of the Roxy deal. Doesn't look like a real good business model to follow. As far as HOT being close and/or over KRBE. It is if you are looking at teens. No where in any other demo is HOT over KRBE. The true money demos are 18-49 and 25-54. KRBE is programmed to make an impact in those demos. Maybe they'll be better once their line-up is set and they have a little more consistency. The huge growth is no good if you can't convince them to listen longer. We need to give them at least a year before we find out if they are a player or not. IMO they should have flipped it to a true active rock and blown a hole right between the Buzz & Arrow. It's well documented thus far that men are carrying the PPM more than women. I think they would have been in a much better postion going into the future and we would have a good rock station (hopefully)!

A 18-49 (ranking by AQH - what buyers/salespeople use)
AM - KRBE #3 / HOT #19
MD - KRBE #6 / HOT #18
PM - KRBE #8 / HOT #13
EV - KRBE #7 / HOT #9

A 25-54 (same criteria as above)
AM - KRBE #3 / HOT #24
MD - KRBE #6 / HOT #19
PM - KRBE #9 / HOT #19
EV - KRBE #7 / HOT #15

Rome wasn't conquered overnight. HOT will eventually force KRBE to choose what "lane" they are going to go down. They can't lean in both anymore. HOT is here to stay.

SFD - I hope you're right. I would hate to think HOT uprooted a morning show from market #161 for nothing.

HAHA, I love how market size determines talent. Market size ONLY determines talent IF AND ONLY IF you have heard that jock/jocks talent before. Its a shame noone seems potential anymore just market size numbers. There are jocks in this market (and many other large/major markets) that should be in a smaller market...even smaller than "161".

Above all...music selection/flow and positioning will put a station on top. Talent is only a small piece of the puzzle. Lets all sit back and let the pot boil before we make judgments. I have a feeling the pot isn't even simmering yet ;)

Man, this made me hungry.

jpcgonebig aka mo' bounce...I think it's great that you and your friend ilistentotheradio are always sticking up for Hot and your fellow dj's..I just don't understand why you don't use your on-air name so everyone knows who you are!!! If you believe 100 percent in what you are posting, you should have no problem doing that!!!

"HOT is here to stay."

I'm sure that logic was uttered at one time by the staff at Party 104.9, the OTHER Hot 97.1, House Party, Energy 96.5, Kiss-FM and Kiss again, and of course 93Q. Did I forget any other format flipping flavors? Uh, Good luck HOT. You have great moments but the odds are against you.

jpcgonebig, aka Mo Bounce: haven't heard you since your days in Philly. I really thought you would end up here in Dallas.

How soon we forget. That's how KILT-AM used to program in its hey day. Remember Hudson & Harrigan in the morning with heavy news emphasis from Jim Carolla. Then middays were kind of AC. Then the pace picked up in PM drive. Then finally Captain Jack catered to the teens at night. They were actually block programming and we didn't realize it. And as I recall the Big 610 had a ton of listeners.

Yea, this is Mo' Bounce...I've said it in many other posts in the past while I was in San Antonio.  I'm not hiding, just do a search.  Hey Nikki (Nicole) how ya been?! Get a gig yet?

And yes I stand up for HOT, I stand up for my fellow team members...this is a family.  Its what I live and breathe.  Its a product I beleive in 100%.  I have passion for what we are doing here.  And I'm thankful.  What's wrong with that?  Passion is lacking for many in this business.  I am proud to be a part of HOT 95-7.

I'm glad you like the broadcast. That would be me spinning live broadcasts and future mixshows to come on Hot 95.7. The irony is that I started the in-house mixshow The Beat at KRBE with Poleman and Cubby back in the 90's. Now I'm back in Houston with Mark Adams and the crew at Hot. We are in fact trying to change the crowd at both venues. I look forward to being part of Houston Radio again.

Hey Riddler! Its great to have you back on the air here in Houston. It's been TOO long. The mixshows just haven't been the same since you left in 95. Man I used to call you all the time to get song titles when you were spinning at Shelter. I have tapes of those shows put away.. man that was great stuff.

Anyway you can rip them and send them to me? I would love to hear what those sounded like. email : [email protected]

I didn't know that was you doing the mixes for HOT.
Is it more dance, more hip-hop, or an even mixture of both?
I'll have to check it out this weekend.
I remember listening to the first broadcast of The Beat back in '94 I think.
If you would have told me then that "I like to move it" would be popular with the kids 10 or 12 years later, I wouldn't have believed it.
I used to call into the dj booth at Shelter myself.
It was very tricky trying to speak loud enough so you can hear me but not so loud that I woke up my parents.
I don't think I have any tapes from when you were in Houston, but I think I still have one from when you were at KTFM in San Antonio.
If I still have it, I'll see if I can rip it for you.
