WKAF Full Power???? A smoking 3.1 kW
Considering that the previous efforts were pirates and an AM daytimer, WKAF was a flamethrower.

Great because they used to play music you liked? (possibly)
....or great because they achieved financial viability? (not yet!)
BTW...What did iHeart pay RadioOne for the station?
I know this thread is a year old. I'm new here. I'm from Philly and have lived in Montgomery for almost 7 years now. I was looking for another smooth jazz station. WVAS used to be it but now you only get a couple of hours a day depending on the announcer. I guess I have to resort to my MP3 player as my car is too old for the radio apps. Shame. Not a fan of NPR, but that's just me.Another great example of where an Urban paradise exists is in the Gump. Here's a list of what one can hear on that dial and yes all these stations sell like hotcakes too, because the market is big enough to support them.
90.7 WVAS (Jazz)
94.1 WZKD AM Relay (Southern Soul/Blues/R&B)
94.5 WUMO-LP (Gospel Jazz/Talk)
96.5 WMGY AM Relay (Gospel)
97.1 WWMG (Urban)
97.9 WJWZ (Hip-Hop)
98.5 WKEM-LP (Urban/Talk)
99.3 WMRK-HD Relay (Black Information News)
100.5 WQKS HD Relay (Classic Hip-Hop)
102.7 WKXN FM Greenville Relay (Southern Soul/Blues/R&B)
104.3 WHLW (Gospel)
105.7 WZHT (Hip-Hop)
800 WMGY (Gospel)
950 WZKD (Southern Soul/Blues/R&B)
1600 WXVI (Gospel)
These stations are very popular and do very well.
In most of the Southern markets, Urban styled programming is king. Other communities within the state of Alabama and the surrounding ones, have many Urban radio stations on their dial. (Examples would include but not only limited to: Mobile Alabama, Tuscaloosa Alabama, Dothan Alabama, Huntsville Alabama, Columbus Mississippi, Columbus Georgia, Memphis Tennessee, Jackson Mississippi, Atlanta Georgia, Macon Georgia and Tallahassee Florida) My own small market has several Urban players and they perform very well.
Now if Boston were to have a big Urban audience, like we have here, there would be more of that programming on the radio dial and better sounding signals. Just saying.
Most of the jazz I've heard on NPR affiliates has been traditional and modern jazz, not "smooth." Would you listen to smooth jazz on an NPR station if one were to program it, or do you avoid NPR altogether because of its perceived political leanings?I know this thread is a year old. I'm new here. He's not in Philadelphia anymore. He said he's been in Montgomery for the past 7 years.Hi, welcome! what radio stations do you have in Philadelphia, that programs Churban, R&B, Adult, etc?
OK, I see! Thank you for the correction! He's not in Philadelphia anymore. He said he's been in Montgomery for the past 7 years.
I feel your pain. Smooth jazz stations are few and far between, if there are any at all. To me, THE very best smooth jazz operation was LA's KTWV 94.7 The Wave. Now the best I can do is scour the iHeart and Audacy apps for smooth jazz. Any smooth jazz that's over-the-air tends to come from FM HD-2 subchannels.I know this thread is a year old. I'm new here. I like WEIB and tune in when around Springfield. Their stream quality sucks thoughAnother mostly smooth jazz station, which also plays some neo-soul:
