Hot 96.9 vs. Hot 106

Hot 96.9, The Rhythm of Boston, also Boston's New Rhythm and the Best Throwbacks.  It's a work in progress, but sounding better as it goes on through 13,000 songs in a row, commercial free.  A nice mix of current and old school from the 80's, 90's, and 2000's (they call throwbacks) hip-hop, R&B, and dance.  The great thing about 96.9 is its signal covers most of RI down to Exeter (south of Exit 5 on Route 95), Narragansett, Jamestown, and Newport.  96.9 is also strong in the multipath problem area within a mile of Neutaconkanut Hill in Johnston and Providence where Hot 106 is weak.  It would be nice to hear Hot 106 play old school music more often, not just in certain shows, because 96.9 is loud and clear in Hot 106's strongest signal area, northern RI (tower in Cumberland, RI) and nearby MA.  But also maybe 92 PRO FM could play an occasional old school song from the 80's, 90's, and 2000's especially since they are king of the (Neutaconkanut) hill (along with Lite Rock 105).  I am sure Hot 96.9 going to have a good amount of RI listeners especially as the station gets better.  Pebbles and possibly Melissa, formerly of the Jam'n 94.5 morning show with Ramiro, will be hosting the Hot 96.9 morning show which will start after the 13,000 songs in a row.

I was waiting for someone to bring this up.I am 42 now a big classic hits fan but get tired of hearing Hotel California and two tickets to Paradise.I like Amp 1033 as an alternative to Wpro and B101 Ill occasionally tune into Cat Country.
I tuned into Hot 96.9 the first or two was not very impressed but I read its getting better as they go along.I read complaintson the Boston board where the same song would play 30 minutes later.this may actually be planned to catch channel surfers with a power hit.
I really don't see Cumulus investing too much into 106.3.the next shoe to fall will be on that station. This year they let Tony Bristol go.broght in Gene Valacente.which won't last.he will have to give up TV or talk show.Hes already showing exhaustion in his Newcastle on Ch 10.i do an early morning job for 6 am and work 2nd shift till 1130.it beats you up after awhile.I get exhausted.

Boston and their present radio war with Amp and Hot covering Rhode Island.I see a bigger chunk taken out of 106.3s listenership I know a lot of people who have always flipped between Jammin and 106.Now with 3 stations bleeding into their audience and I see something happening there.
as much as I would like to see Scott Shannon re appear that's wont happen either.classic hits is a dying format even with good numbers.
a simulcast of Wpro and Wean would boost their AM audience via fm.

so all in all. changes will be made at 106.3 by years end.whether personnel cuts or format change.Im leaning towards personal cuts and a tweaking of music before a format change but don't wanna rule it out.Which would leave an opportunity for CC to go into a rhythmic type format.

Tony Bristol wasn't let go, he quit.

That could be a smart move or a dumb move depending on how you look at it. Smart to get out of a business that clearly shows a lack of respect for talent. Dumb because there are so few radio jobs that you should probably hold onto one when you've got one. Well I wish him much future success. He's one of the few people in radio who I've always liked.

I definitely see Hot 106 taking a huge hit from Amp 103.3, and now Hot 96.9. They just announced Melissa today will be joining Pebbles on the station. I also hear less repetitiveness as they open up the format and include more listener feedback. I think Hot 106 and Jam'n also have their work cut out for them

Very simple. North and west of Providence, 99.7's signal can be very spotty. With the theory that powerhouse/heritage AM stations need FM signals, 630 AM does not have full Providence market FM coverage. Adding 106.3, as much as I would personally despise the move, would allow WPRO to reach nearly all the state, as 106.3's signal strength is Providence and points north.

How much revenue could the trimulcast get with the addition of 106.3? Pascoag? Is 99.7 spotty there? I don't know of many businesses in Burrillville, not enough to support blowing up the only Rhythmic Top 40 in Providence. Secondly, form what I am hearing, WMAL-FM is having a hard time making a go of it in D.C.. That from reading the D.C. board. Where a lot of people in R.I., let's face it, are old enough to remember WPRO as being on the dominant band, 630 seems to be still strong to survive on its own. I've heard 630 out on the Cape in the daytime. Yes, WPRO's nighttime signal has deficiencies but 99.7 covers those well. Again, I don't see what additional revenue adding 106.3 would give versus what they'd lose by flipping.

Outside of car radios, 99.7 becomes very spotty in parts of Providence itself. There are population centers that 99.7 has a hard time reaching, including Pawtucket, the Attleboros, North Providence, and Woonsocket. I agree that the 630 AM signal is sufficient, especially given Rhode Island's demographics and listening habits. However, as much as I do not want to see WPRO on FM, 106.3 is a very good compliment to 99.7.
