Oh great another Hit music station... just what we need. Unless they slant a little dance but if they program right between jamz and kiss.. i don't think I will be that interested.

It's going to be a Hot AC...see the Movin' Christmas thread.

Ok I will rephrase.. Oh great its going to be another Hot AC. Was hoping for something original for a change but I guess that is too much to ask for these days. grrrr

Isn't that the truth...

There is such an overlap of music from Hip/Hop to Rhytmic CHR...From Rhythmic CHR to CHR Mainstream...From CHR Mainstream to Hot AC...From Hot AC to Modern...etc...

Why can't we have a station that plays songs that other stations DON'T? I've lived long enough now to know that there are MANY MANY MANY songs that get no airplay.

I would have even been happy if it was a modern ac/triple a/classic alternative type of station. There are alot of songs there that don't get airplay. So with this new branding they are going to try and squeeze so listeners from Mix and the upper demos from Kiss and maybe get a few to cross over from Kez. hmmm good luck with that

KEZ, The Peak, and Mixx are in the Top 10 (if not the Top 5). They all play a version of AC. Add all those listeners up, and that's a combined 12 share at least.

If you were the PD of a station that is in the Bottom 10 of the market (barely pulling a 2 share on occasion), it might make sense to compete with the bigger piece of the pie. Do I like the idea? No. I think my opinions on the station (or what they should play) are irrelavent. I think its funny how I keep reading posts "in hopes of a dance lean". Not gonna happen. In 2009, the PD has admitted "dance is not a real format" verbatim. It's also funny how much dance they were forced to play in 2010 (Day and Nite, Sexy Chic, LMFAO, Pitbul, etc).

He's right.

You know what they call someone who owns an all-dance radio station in the USA?

Broke.

If it doesn't cross over to the pop chart, put it on your iPod.

I was just pointing out that it's wasted time to speculate dance on 97.5, when it's not even on their radar. As far as it being a real format or not, I can see John's points from a business stand point (especially on U.S. Radio). However, it obviously generated revenue once upon a time, and currently that trend is somewhat repeating itself (at least musically).

This is just another disappointment from a long list of Phoenix FM radio stations trying to re-brand themselves. There are still many holes in the Phoenix radio market that are not being addressed (AAA, oldies, sports on FM, classic alternative, Fresh), yet the owners of 97.5 are trying, yet again, to directly compete with KISS, Power, JAMZ, MIX, MEGA, The Beat and the Peak. Don't we already have enough of these stations in Phoenix? ???

Newsflash Trumper, the market is already saturated with Urban, AC and Pop music stations. Try something different for a change!

asugeo--doesn't KOOL or the Lumberyard count? Or is there a special oldies "niche" that
you want to target? What about the Big 'BSZ, before they flipped to the Nifty 1260?

Of course all the consultants will likely shoot down anything other than the present classic
hits format genre (i.e., KOOL) as being too old in demos (55+ = ouch!) , too big a library
(just play the hits, rinse, repeat), too "Kookie" ;D, etc.

Would it really be a sin or even a detriment for a station to even consider broadening its playlist? At this point, I don't really care whether we get a full-fledged dance station again (OK, I lie), but what is the harm in having a top 40 station that doesn't have such a tight playlist where you're hearing the same artists four times in one hour? Are we only considering a station with a tight playlist a success because there is nothing else to compare it to (with current music)? I seem to remember stations doing VERY well when we weren't quite sure WHAT they were going to be playing next and it seemed like a competition between stations to see who could play the newer music first rather than who could play the same artists over and over again the most. I would like to hear a station play a variety of new music (mainstream what we're already hearing), a hot new dance hit (NOT what we're already hearing), a song with an alternative lean, and perhaps a flashback song that either sounded familiar or was a pretty good tune that either we forgot about (but was a hit during its time). I've spoken with sooooo many people who didn't grow up in the 80's or earlier 90's who are very surprised at how good the music was then, but they never hear many of the songs because the songs never get any airplay.

OK...rant over.

The Lumberyard really is the valley's only true oldies station mainly because KOOL is now a classic hits station that leans heavily on 70’s and 80’s music. With that said, it's hard to even count the Lumberyard as an oldies station when they only play six hours of music on any given weekday thanks to the various talk shows and their refusal to broadcast at night. If my ASU math is correct, that's only a quarter of the entire broadcast day. Because of that fact, I can’t consider the Lumberyard as an oldies station. It’s pretty sad when a radio station decides to power off its programming during one of the most popular radio listening times – evening drive time.

What we need in Phoenix is something along the lines of Cruisin Oldies 950 (which has done so well in Denver that they’ve added a translator on FM) or 94.7 FM WLS in Chicago. There are definitely enough retirees around Phoenix to at least warrant a try at a true oldies station in Phoenix. I would think something like that would do a lot better in the ratings than just another rebranding of Movin’ 97.5 as Hot 97.5! 8)

P.S. We all knew that Rock and Roll 1260 was doomed to failure thanks to their horrible night-time signal. It would have been a good idea, but they didn’t start translating on FM until after the switch to NBC talk. I live in Gilbert and 1260’s Apache Junction signal is just as bad as KOY’s signal from Phoenix. Now that’s saying something!

Is it just me or does anyone else find it funny that a Hot AC station is calling themselves Hot and also saying they are Hits Now. Those two seem to go with a CHR more than a HOT AC. Hmmmm just saying.

Urban? Where's the urban at?

Ok nevermind! KNRJ is Urban.

But I think if they do a pop/rock lean top 40 sound (the way I suggested about a year ago), that would be a good idea. We do have a large hole for a top 40 station that leans pop rock without being as alternative as Mix 96.9..

By the way, isn't a Hot AC just a Top 40 that leans more alternative / pop rock? Are they really Hot AC or adult top 40? Hits Now implies they'll be playing pop & pop rock hits, and unlike the MOViN format, none of this possible rhythmic ac or hot ac or urban ac material at the top of every hour. Hopefully they bring back Dj Pauly or Greggy D, and hopefully they'll play Sick Puppies and the new Linkin Park and some Nickelback.

I know I'll most likely get replies to this for obvious reasons, but.. I meant everything I've said after "hopefully", 100%.

They probably could just go back to pure Rhythmic AC like they were when their ratings were on the rise before they suddenly went Hot AC rhythmic. Hopefully they are successful with whatever they do this time around and that they don't have to be slick & slight with KMXP.
