Any thoughts on HOT 97.5 beating KLUC in the recent trend? KLUC has defeated many competitors through the decades (and forced many of them to change formats). KVEG is proving to be their toughest competitor ever.
My theory is that because KLUC is a shade more mainstream than HOT, their listeners may share more with some of the non-rhythmic stations. OTOH, the HOT audience is composed of more of the rhythmic core including those who "live the hip hop lifestyle". The hip hop fans that listen to HOT have little interest in flipping to non-rhythmic stations, this helps explain why HOT's TSL is longer than KLUCs.
I do expect the rhythmic race to tighten up again when the Winter book is released next month. Hot is losing a great December while KLUC is dropping off a subpar December. This supports my theory as I believe SUNNY going all-Christmas in December does attract some of KLUCs suburban females while it does not interest HOT's passionate hip hop fans.
