Hot 97 Boston is Back ( Legal )

for a second, I thought you meant they got a license from the title, was wondering if you were still sane till I saw the post itself.

A twitter search for Hot 97 Boston turns up
--hot 97 Boston is no more.
--Hot 97 Boston still aint payed their bill tho o_O ?!?!
--Can someone explain what happened to hot 97 (87.7) Boston!? I'm soooo tired of 94.5”

Well, the FCC Field Notices are up to March 22 and there is nothing about 87.7——maybe it wasn’t the FCC that busted them?

Yes I keep checking and find nothing. But supp. it was an FCC raid, we hear. Who else would
bust them (what agency...?)

BARP, obviously?

Bostonians against radio piracy?

Occupy the Radio !! I got a Tweet that will be a protest march plan on April 23rd against FCC for shutting down Hot 97 Boston. I don't know how true this is because its still a lot of April fools jokes out there.

So dumb. Protest something that happened because they were running an illegal operation.

Again, get all these numbskulls together, raise some cash and buy airtime on WILD. The community gets served. They have a legal operation. The Chinese govt is off WILD. Everybody wins.

Instead, let's all waste time and energy to support illegal activities. I don't get it. Should I protest because bank robbers are getting caught??

Time for the tin-foil hats, I see.

Yes, it was the FCC that busted them. However, FCC Field Notices don't cover raids.

No, no tin-foil hat, I was just wondering if——since there wasn’t either any public FCC acknowledgment or multiple radio news website stories about it (like there seems to be every week)——that maybe it was either an IRS (or MA DOR) raid or a C&D (ASCAP and/or BMI originating?) that they took uncharacteristically serious, for whatever reason?
But if you say you know for a fact it was the FCC, I’ve got no reason to doubt you. 8)

There's a page at DIYMedia.net that does show raids, notices, etc but they haven't gotten to displaying March yet. A quick
scan by me doesn't show notices of unauthorized operations for 87.7 but there were some for 97.5 (same people;
they "moved"), Datz Hits 99.7, etc. Maybe Touch 106.1 too. To get there go to diymedia.net and look for FCC Watch:
Enforcement Database and click around for year

http://diymedia.net/fccwatch/eadtable12.htm
Often it will say Postal (notification), Fine, or Visit but sometimes you'll see "Raid/Arrest" as in last June when they raided
a station in Pompano Beach FL (that one links to a news item right here on radio-info )

there is a length interview with Paul Parrara, Hot97 GM in the March 22nd Bulletin newspaper (avail thruout boston) discussing the incident, he claims no knowledge of who was broadcasting their online stream over FM and also mentions theres been no FieldNotice on 87.7

At least three were posted at the FCC site. Lying about them doesn't make them go away, but I don't expect anything more from a criminal.

He "had know knowledge" of who was broadcasting their stream. Yeah right, and there's a bridge in Brooklyn I have for sale if he's interested.

What a crock of s***. All the other notices for 97.5 have his name on them.

Just because they're streaming online, it doesn't mean they're now legal. Internet Radio stations are required to pay pretty hefty royalty fees which I doubt they're paying. Royalty Payments are atleast somewhat enforced, I know of a few internet broadcasters which large audiences who got Cease and Desist letters from Sound Exchange. Seeing their big audience and large following, if they keep dodging Sound Exchange and the record companies, which I suspect they are, it's probably a lawsuit waiting to happen.

A few of the airstaff at HOT97Boston have worked for my internet radio stations in the past. The few I have worked with and spoken to are genuinely nice and friendly people, trying to make money off of doing what they love. Of course they know what they're doing, but obviously they decided the benefits outweighed the risks.

we really should be compiling a list, up to about a half-dozen things a decent lawsuit could be put together around now

also, there is now a licensed user of 87.7, National Public Radio labs has been granted an "Experimental" license, so interference to licensed user of the *same* frequency, let alone taking over my poor walkman's AFC (like 90.1 sometimes does over WZBC when it's on) on 88.1

This is an interesting find. It is nowhere near Boston, it is in New Haven, CT. WEDY-DT filed for and was granted a construction permit to move from VHF 6 to UHF 41.

87.70 is not an "FM band" Frequency, it never has been. It is a TV frequency. Look up the FCC table of allotments, the FM band goes from 87.90 (Channel 200) to 107.9 (Channel 300). My new Pioneer HD car receiver won't tune 87.7, and because analog TV is long gone, other than some LPTVs, it is a safe bet that all tuners will now exclude 87.7.
