Hot 97 Playing The Same Song straight for 30 Minutes

(I also posted this here also just in case some people don't go in the Hip-Hop forum, so I can get some type of answer)

This is nothing new, they do this all the time if one of the DJ's think a track is really hot. Today Funkmaster Flex got hold of a new track called "Otis" by Kanye West & Jay-Z, and proceeded to spin the first verse at least 20 times. From 7:30 to 8:00PM this was the only song playing. But like I said, this happens on a regular basis. If I had a penny for everytime Flex or another Hot 97 DJ repeated the same song for 30 minutes straight, sometimes even 45 minutes (I am not exaggerating), I'd be rich.

This leads me to ask, does Hot 97 even have any programming? Or do the DJ's just play the songs from a playlist whenever they feel like it. Do the DJ's just get to do whatever they want (obviously Flex does), or do you think the PD really tells people like Flex to pull stunts like this. I mean their number one song has been played nearly 140 times this week. Sometimes the same songs are repeated 20-30 mintues within each other. Rarely, their will even be a 10-15 min gap between the same exact song, but it does happen. I just find it hard to believe the PD/MD of this station tell their DJ's what to do. I mean, Flex will play the most random old school hip-hop records that are nowhere in sight in the Hot 97 playlist, like rare street records from the 1980's on a regular basis.

If Hot 97 doesnt tell their DJ's what to do, are they the only station in the country to give their DJ's complete 100% freedom? Cause every other station I see, the DJ's have at least some type of restriction or list.

I believe you about playing the same song for 30 minutes or more he did the same thing for Jay-Z Death of Auto tune when it first came out. As for the programming base on all my years growing up listening to hot 97 the mix show dj's have freedom to play whatever records they want. As for flex i think his show is programed music wise between 8pm-10pm but 7pm, and 10pm-12pm he could do whatever he wants base on the records he does plays.

here is the video of that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5cx37glT_I&feature=channel_video_title

Playing songs 2 or 3 times an hour is quite common on CHR these days. I'm in SF, where 92.7 The Rev plays "Rolling in the Deep"
upwards of 40 times a DAY.

And I'm not the same "Mike" who posted above -- how could there be 2 of us with the same handle on this board?? WTF?

I, too, have noticed the presence of two users named "Mike" on this forum... Obviously, one of you has to have a different login name (i.e. one is "Mike" and the other is a different username that is displayed on the board as "Mike"). Weird...

Getting back to the topic, though... Few people forget that the old "Musicradio 77 WABC" used to play the hell out of the number one song back in the day...

You're right about my username, which is is RadioJunkieMike, but which for some reason (censorship software?) shows up as simply "Mike".

And indeed, I grew up listening to WABC, which played the #1 song every hour (and #2 and #3 every other hour). But 2 OR 3 TIMES AN HOUR seems excessive. Back in the day Top 40 stations actually played 40 songs (or close to it). Playing 8 or 9 is just nuts, unless you're 12 years old and like hearing Justin Beiber that often.

On top of you all answering my questions about Hot 97, today Mister Cee has been playing "New Age Pop-Rock" songs like Queen, Nirvana, and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts today for the Throwback Mix At Noon. Yes, Queen and Nirvana on New York's Hip-Hop & R&B. All my questions have been answered. Thank you! LOL!

Didn't wabc play the #1 song every 65 minutes?

74 minutes

Thought I was close. and a Bell would ring right?

During the day -- at least during Dan Ingram's show -- the #1 song would play at five past the hour, every hour. And the #2 and #3 would alternate hours at :35 past. The bell would ring after the "W-A-B-Ceeeeeee" jingle for any song in the top 14 (14 being 2 times 7). And deejays would then give the time as "WABC chime time". The jingle without the bell ran after all other songs.

Perhaps it might seem like that, but according to mediabase its 117 times this week and last. While that is certainly high, its surely not 40 a day......

all I know is, they were playing it twice an hour in drive time, and the same has been true of all their other "power" songs in the last 6 months. Maybe other dayparts are different.
