HOT 97 sounding Top-40; turn for the worse?

Is anyone else curious what the "method behind the madness" is with Hot 97 playing more Top-40 music such as Katy Perry, Lorde and Bruno Mars? Anyone that pays attention to the station and the "politics" know that playing actual hip-hop and specifically NYC artists has been a huge topic amongst many for months. PD Ebro Darden has been taking a lot of shots for being the man behind the weird turn the station has taken as well as internal issues with staff. Could HOT face the same fate as KISS-FM in the very near future? This station was once thought of as a NYC institution for hip-hop so I'm curious as to where this station is going exactly.
