Hot 97 vs Power 106 (LA)

The 2 sister stations used to sound similar but now seem to be drifting apart.. and it seems Power 106 is going the right route by keeping up with musical trends and playing more dancey/electro hip hop in heavy rotation, such as LMFAO (David Rush/Love Lockdown remix), DJ Class (Im The Ish), Lady Gaga, Kid Cudi, Black Eyed Peas, Pitbull (Calle Ocho), Far East Movement (Girls on the dancefloor), etc...

Now it doesnt take a genius to realize how music has gone Dance and Hip Hop has morphed away from the "dirty south" sound that conquered (and maybe killed?) hip hop for the past few years...

Is Hot 97 doing the right thing by not leading this trend or should they stick to the old Hip Hop sound?

Absolutely hot97 should stick to hip hop. New York is the home of rap music. Listening to the pop stations you still hear alot of rap artist. All the young kids i run in to still listen to alot of rap music. Ny & LA are completely different markets.

I agree, LA is a totally different market. But it seems trends are going towards a more rhythmic CHR, but then again, we just got Now 92.3, so pretty much too late for Hot 97 to go in that direction. If they are struggling and need a "new format", maybe they should start going towards the "classic hip hop" format. I heard a few such stations on hd2 that sounded awesome, I think one was in Cincinnati? Thats the only "urban fomat hole" that I can see in New York at this point.

However, its going all "Dirty South" that hurt them I think. Come on.. Dirty South???? In New York????? I hear more "Yankee Style" Jams on 102 Jamz, Orlando.

* Note, If they want to up the ratings without drastic change, Hot 93.7 Hartford is the station to copy. Whenever I passed through Connecticut, I was always impressed. That station was definitely one of the best urban stations out there.

HOT 97 and HOT 93.7 playlist both look about the same to me Both stations seem to have the same Urban leaning Rhythmic sound.

Hot 93.7 has "Stanky Legg" "Ain't I" Soulja boy "kiss me thru the phone" in the playlist

I realize you're exaggerating, but "all dirty south" is pretty unfair given that a look at their top 40 songs only yields a few "dirty south" artists (T.I., Soulja Boy, DJ Khaled). Don't fault the station for playing that- it's what sells. Also, I don't understand what the bent is against southern hip hop or how it "killed hip hop" (although living in the south, I admit that if I hear "Cupid Shuffle" played in the clubs one more time I might lose it). If the product was better in either the east coast or west coast camps, then that is what would be popular in years past. Competition generally makes the product better. East coast hip hop has clearly not been as popular- but it's also the camp that has generally resisted the electro/dance sound the longest (Jay Z's recent single "Brooklyn"- is conincidentally the #1 spun song on Hot 97)-- while the southern hip hop artists have been on board (with Akon, Pitbull, Soulja Boy's Kiss Me Through the Phone). East coast producers/rappers need to get on the boat this time around--- it's not Hot 97's fault or their responsibility to play music that isn't selling at the moment.

Also, 102Jamz is probably not the best example of a pure "southern" hip hop station. Generally, Orlando and Miami markets are closer musically to the west coast stations, in that they play more of the upbeat electro hip hop and the recurrents are generally 2pac songs (although there is a genuine Florida spin to things- Grind Mode "I'm so High" never got big outside of Florida). Jill Strada, who up to recently was programming Hot 97, hails from WPYO/Power 95.3 Orlando- which might explain for some variance in the type of music that has been played in recent memory versus the Hot 97 of the late 90's/early 00's.

Don't forget that Power in LA is an Hispanic targeted station, while Hot is not. 55% to 60% of Power's listening is from Hispanics, and less than 20% from blacks, while Hot averages 57% Black listening and about 17% Hispanic. So the targets are very different... even the Hispanic part is different, as in LA it is predominately Mexican and in NY predominately caribbean.

Pitbull is sometimes played during mix shows
