Hot AA (Hot Adult Alternative)

We have Hot AC on the radio dial but I was thinking about if we had a Hot Adult Alternative if a format like this was to happen what would it sound like? a mix of AAA/Active Rock, AAA/Alternative or maybe some Hot AC thrown in

Your Thoughts?

Such a format, in my imagination, would sound something like these three stations I've heard of...

- The Current, an FM station in Minnesota
- An Internet station called Radio Paradise
- The "Alternative Side" of WFUV

These three stations are quite upbeat and diverse.

This type of format is a bit more upbeat then regular AAA, yet doesn't depend as much on guitar-based harder-edged rock music as the alternative rock and active rock formats do.

As for hot AC music, I don't know if there is a station out there that plays mainstream pop songs and experimental indie music. Such a format would be interesting to listen to.

"MR2" - a Hungarian station mixes mainstream pop with indie rock.

There were similar experiments on 103.7 San Diego as "Sophie - Now. New. Next." and "Modern Music" Click 98.9 in Seattle.

It's debatable how much of the "indie" component remains at Click but it was a stated part of the station at launch.

There actually was a format often termed "AA" in the 90s. The "Rock Alternative" era adult moderns like KXPK Denver, KZON Phoenix, and KAEP in Spokane. The format consisted of generous amounts of 80s modern (Depeche Mode, Cure, INXS) and currents. Much less emphasis on album cuts or fringe genres than traditional AAA.

Wouldn't it eventually segue into something like Modern AC? KQKQ & KLCK? Kelly Clarkson & Pink typically have guitar synth behind them...do they crossover to a "hot" alt sound? They would sound great next to Phoenix, Naked & Famous, etc.

The current version of KGSR 93.3 Austin might also be in this style - much more Hot AC/Alt leaning as opposed to the more roots oriented KGSR of the past.

I'm not sure what the definition of that format would be, but I'll throw in WYMS in Milwaukee (Radio Milwaukee). They are a non-com AAA, but concentrate heavily on a younger demographic. Lots of alternative product, in addition to "alternative R&B", quality and classic hip-hop (i.e. no Lil Wayne), and some of the typical AAA fare (like Adele). Interesting station.

Your Thoughts?

Two AAA/HAC hybrid stations are Cities 97/Minneapolis and 103.1 KCDA/Spokane WA

AAA/Active Rock wouldn't work IMO cause you're mixing two completely opposite demographics

Bingo. The listeners of artists like Adele, Mumford, Wilco, etc. don't want to hear Disturbed, Metallica, Shinedown, etc. and vice versa. They tried the blender approach with the original WRXP/NY and it sounded like a mess.

True, Rocket..it's as if they dreamed up the "New York's Rock Experience" handle and thought that gave them license to play anything that might be played on a rock station somewhere or anywhere. Only they forgot to consider what the audience might want. Poorly positioned, poorly executed. Probably too many cooks at that one. And no clear cut vision.

To be fair, WRXP never played acts like Disturbed or Shinedown, and only a smattering of Metallica (mass appeal ones like "Enter Sandman"). By the end, they were mostly a very safe Alternative station that mixed in a few late 70's/80's hard rock acts like AC/DC, Van Halen, and Guns N Roses. I guess they figured those were well-liked enough acts that they could mix them with today's Alternative. Their ratings did get better towards the end, so I guess this approach may have worked to a certain degree. But then again, the reincarnated WRXP was getting close to the same ratings after 2 months with a purely Alternative format, so who knows?

After reading this thread gave WXRY a listen online. Wow, have to say I love them. I'm a Sirius subscriber and usually listen to the Spectrum, but gotta say this stations kicks butt.
