Hot AC in Seattle

For as long as I have been following the ratings and probably long before then, KPLZ has dominated. In my lifetime, they have had 3 competitors and all have failed. Why? Well, we can't call Click a failure just yet but has anyone else noticed they've completely lost focus? I heard I Kissed a Girl by Katy Perry on that station a couple weeks ago, something that KPLZ never played when it was new and still does not play, and last night I heard Price Tag, something that when Click first launched they would have never touched. Not only that, but they didn't even play the no-rap edit!

Star does well for two reasons: Its heritage morning show and its pattern of format evolution, not revolution. No competitor can EVER gain those two advantages.

Oh, and Star DID play Katy Perry's first hit. Guess you weren't following along closely enough.

Guess not, when was that? Before about July of 2008, I didn't tune around the dial much, I usually listened to KCMS. I didn't switch fulltime to Star until March of 2010. KMBX I think could have gotten some ratings, but they blew it up for Urban Oldies instead. I don't remember KLSY being a constant wheel of formats like Click is? I remember they kept everything except the name when they switched in 2002, then the morning show departed, and I think in about 2005 they relaunched with a heavier focus on 80s music, but don't really remember anything else about that station, though from discussions on this board it appears they were Adult CHR at one point. I listened to KLSY from the time KMBX started stunting until July of 2002 when I switched to KJR.

KPLZ has actually had four or five competitors since I have been in town since the mid-nineties. I remember KBKS was kind of a HOT-AC to start, with an Australian afternoon guy, before that I think 95.7 was MIX-FM, then of course KLSY which then became Mix then MOVIN, KLCK and maybe a few more. I think Brewer's comments are right. The station evolves slowly so no one hardly notices and has a heritage morning show. My wife is hooked. I bounce around from news, to sports, to KMTT (though not much anymore) to the CHR's, KISW and Country on and off. Typical guy. I notice I spend less and less time with Pandora these days and just cancelled Sirius. Not sure why, just didn't use it much.

There is far more to Star's success than whether they played a Katy Perry song or not. Also, Kent & Alan's tenure can be a blessing and a curse, but they have obviously adapted to today's radio.

Both points right on AQH. I was not pointing that out in terms of Star not playing it although would be nice to hear that one on the radio a little more often. The thing is, I have always thought of Click as a rock-oriented Hot AC, so they are playing rhythmic-leaning songs that KPLZ hasn't touched in 4 years?

That Australian guy was "Outback Jack" and I think he was only there briefly during KBKS's Rhythmic AC beginnings (1996). A year later, they went full blown CHR.

KMBX ("Mix 95.7") lasted 2000-2001

And it's true. Change at KPLZ is so subtle, you hardly notice it.

its sad cause i had listened to KWJZ for years and i remember back in bout around 1990 to 1994 when they became KWJZ and now they are another hot ac type station. the only reason they changed the format is cause of the advertising they ran wasn't for the listeners and they were targeting the wrong crowd of ad demographic and weren't making enough bucks from it also because of the number of artists they played that weren't even smooth jazz but more easy listening or dinner jazz or even stuff like Phill Collins or Nora Jones or artists that never fit but they still played. Because of all that the station owner changed format and got rid of smooth jazz in seattle all together which hurts listeners of smooth jazz. it makes people have to turn to other stations or find online smooth jazz stations or sirius/xm smooth jazz stations to get them by. also they would mention when artists were going to be playing at any one of the jazz venues or even play at the winery. The only jazz left is what little is played on Kplu and mostly they play jazz artists that you never hear of or that may have had one hit or as my dad says they are basicly pulling out stuff thats old and dusty and of artists you never have heard of. Bring back the smooth jazz.

RMX, I have the alternative!

KOAZ 103.7, Albuquerque, NM. A GREAT smooth jazz station. If you hate Kenny G, this is the station for you. Latin Guitar, Smooth Jazz and Smooth Vocals without the Kenny G.

I'm listening now (8:37 Wednesday night) and I REALLY like what I'm hearing. KWJZ rarely, if ever touched The Manhattan Transfer in their playlist.

Listening at the same time! Was the Manhattan Transfer song "Soul Food to Go"? I hear that occasionally on KOAZ. Listen for some rare '80s Al Jarreau (like All of My Love and My Old Friend), that gets played often.

No. It was "Mystery"

Oh yeah. Also aired a lot. Surprisingly they don't play the Anita Baker "Mystery" version. I have heard a couple of Anita Baker's (Same Old Love 365 Days, Caught Up in the Rapture), but some are missing (like "Talk to Me") from the playlist.
Maybe someday KOAZ can syndicate across the country. Who knows with Steve Hibbard as PD (former Jones Smooth Jazz jock).

The Manhattan Transfer version of "Mystery" is still the definitive one, I guess.....

I notice KOAZ is actually an AM station with a handy, listener boosting FM translator. K279BP. Still seems strange to have a translator get more attention than the main signal.

As for syndication. Nah. Keep it real in Albuquerque.....
