Hot ACs That Go CHR/Pop At Night

There are several Hot ACs stations that straddle the line between Hot A/C and CHR/Pop, namely CBS several CBS Radio outlets (Mix 106.5 Baltimore, Star 100.7 Pittsburgh, Q-104 Cleveland) as well as Q-98 Fayetteville.

There's now also a growing number of Hot ACs that seem to go pretty much full blown CHR at night. 92.9 ZZU Spokane has been doing it for a few years, and this sound can now also be found on I-94 Indianapolis, Mix 106.3 Lexington, and especially at Kelly 95.3 Bakersfield. It also looks like 94.9 The Point Norfolk has recently gone in this direction.

That 94.9 The Point/Norfolk situation is crazy - it's like two different stations

Kelly 95.3/Bakersfield makes sense I think, cause (1)it's exclusively covering both Hot AC and CHR in that market, and (2)the CHR tracks are still mixed in during the daytime hours, just not as frequently

I, too, am confused about the drastic change (musically) that occurs after 7:00 p.m. when "Devin On Demand" airs on The Point in Norfolk, Virginia. Do y'all think the same people who listen to the Hot/ Modern AC on The Point during the day will stick around for Devin and the CHR she plays, or are they going after a completely different nighttime audience? Will this take any listeners from The Point's sister station Z-104? I guess this is what they call dayparting.

"Devin On Demand" recently replaced five-hour long chick-fest "Your Time With Kim Iverson" which aired on The Point about two years. Kim sounds like a hard-working lady and I wish her the best but her show was not to my liking, and I am a female in her target demographic. Is "Your Time With Kim Iverson" still heard on other Entercom stations or has her program been cancelled? (Just asking, not hating!)

Don't forget tat Bakersfield is served by a CHR/Pop station

I think they must be testing the waters for a potential shift to CHR

IMO there's no way the same listeners that want to hear It Must Have Been Love by Roxette during the day want to hear CHR at night

But, atlantaboy, aren't The Point and Z-104 both owned by Entercom? Would it make sense for two stations in the same cluster to compete? Are there subtle differences between the music The Point plays at night and what is played on Z-104 or are they about the same? I don't listen to Z-104 like I used to because I am too old!

Z104 is a rhythmic CHR, but still - I doubt Entercom would do 2 CHR based formats in that market. I thought The Point as a Modern AC (used to be)/Hot AC and Z104 as a Rhythmic CHR made more sense...Maybe they're trying to further distance The Point from 2WD (AC)?

I don't know what 94.9 The Point is trying to do at night, but it doesn't make much sense. Kim's show is still on The Point, from 7pm-10pm.

The funny thing is, while most stations that would do this do it from 7pm-5am? or so, The Point does it from 7pm-11pm. That's just weird. Eminem/LMFAO/Bad Meets Evil/Nicki Minaj in the 10pm hour then Jack Johnson/Dave Matthews/Paramore etc in the 11pm hour...

Sounds like a practice done on small town stations. Reminds me of an urban station in the 90s that was urban ac in the daytime and went hip hop at night before the quiet storm in the early morning.

Norfolk VA definitely isn't a small town
Yeah....I think The Point should stick with Hot AC. They're one of my favorites with the format - they have more of a modern AC lean (however, that isn't quite as true as it once was), like I said, and avoid a lot of the rhythmic stuff that's infiltrated on CBS Hot AC's. Entercom does a pretty good job with Hot AC.

Correction - they actually do the CHR thing from 7p-12a, not 7p-11p. Hard to imagine a station that plays Joan Jett at 2p playing Nicki Minaj 5 hours later...

^I know that 96X/Norfolk evolved from Alternative to a Modern AC/Alternative hybrid this past summer - maybe The Point is responding to the fact that 96X is taking a lot of their "Modern AC" audience

As far as Entercom, Z104 is a clear Rhythmic station (with plenty of exclusive Rhythmic-Urban tracks), so I don't think moving The Point to Adult CHR would be a conflict of interest

What about 94.3 WJLK in Monmouth-Ocean? They bill themselves as "The Jersey Shore's Hit Music Station", are they just an adult-leaning CHR or do they daypart?

Going from the playlist on AllAccess, that's a pretty straight forward Hot AC

"Your Time with Kim Iversen" recently changed their syndication options, which led some music stations to drop the show. It is now offered as a live two hour all talk show (no music), and music stations have the options to get it voicetracked and insert their own music.

Thought I'd point out that looking at the recent 6+ PPM's, The Point/VA Beach's numbers are on a downward trend, and the numbers aren't great, so whatever they're doing right now must not be that popular...

Billy Bush provides a Hot AC feed and a content-only (with no music) feed so it makes no sense why i94 doesn't just run one of those. As far as two stations being CHR within the same company, very common today. If one is a rhythmic CHR, and the other is an Adult CHR/Modern AC, it's definitely safe to keep them both within the same building. Often listeners will flip back and forth between those two stations. It's called owning the market. Many stations won't do this though.
