Hot Hits WBBM-FM

I read in Feder's column that WBBM-FM's Top 40 format hit the air 25 years ago next week. Apparently they won't be making a big deal out of it like WLS did in 1985 for their 25th.

I'm not from Chicago so I never had much of a chance to listen to BBM-FM in those days. (Only through tapes.) I've always been a much bigger fan of WLS (and WCFL through tapes.)

When Hot Hits first debuted on BBM did you like it better than LS or did you like the Big 89 better? Or by 1982 were you listening to WLS on 94.7?

I seem to remember that in that era, WLS started using less jingles. Maybe as a result of BBM using so many back to back? When I hear aircheck tapes from those days, WBBM-FM is annoying to listen to! (This coming from a guy who loves jingles!)

What are your thoughts?

I've have to agree with you about the TM jingles that WBBM-FM has as being annoying. You probably are aware that they are originally from a 1977 package that was called "Fusion". To me, they seemed dated when they were used with the then-current hits that the station played. The later TM jingles that was done when the station became "B-96" (Airpower, Airpower Plus, etc:) sounded much better between the records.

Recently, I've found this while I was browsing You Tube. This is WBBM-FM's TV spot from 1982 with the TM "Hot Hits" jingles:

Hot Hits creator Mike Joseph used the TM Fusion jingle package on all of his "Hot Hits" station.

That was one cool package....though perhaps overused on " Hot Hits."

I am from Detroit, and we had a station similiar to WBBM..... WHYT

Here is a jingle from WHYT back in the Day

Does anyone know if ABC owned WBBM & WHYT during that time....???

i would visit Chicago in the summer's and WBBM reminded me of WHYT.....Dance & TOP 40 hits,,,,

i'm almost tired of all the Hip Hop.......where's some of the Dance music.they used to play..??

Isn't it interesting that the old WBBM "Hot Hits" logo is very similar to the KIIS FM Blue Ball Logo??

Actually, CBS owned WBBM-FM (and AM). WLS AM/FM was the ABC O&O in Chicago. Like WLS, WHYT was owned by ABC (later Cap Cities)

Reading this thread reminds me of how much I enjoyed listening to B96 and Z95 back in the mid-Eighties to the early ninties before we lost Z95 and B96 went more rhythmic. 8)
