Hot, it's time to step it up....

You now have competition. "105.9 The Beat" is on! www.jammin1059.com

Recent history seems to indicate there is room for only one hip-hop station in this market. We'll see what happens. Something's gotta give.

Is Ryan Seacrest's syndicated afternoon show going to continue? Not exactly compatible with this format... I guess its a contractual issue (a la Howard Stern remaining on Beat 104.3 after it's brief Coyote experiment).

Why?

Hot will find it hard to step it up when 105.9 has a far superior signal.

I don't know....93.3 is a blowtorch signal covers all the way into Waco and covers Killeen-Temple area as well as Austin. It's gonna be real interesting Hip Hop battle in the ATX.

^^^

I dont see this station staying Hip Hop very long. Having said that and not planning on hiring jocks I disagree with you. Hot is still going to win.

My best guess is that it will go to Spanish but who knows... maybe FM talk?

From what I hear Clrear Channel has been trying to sell the station for awhile now but still no takers. One reason why the Beat 104.9 failed was because its signal was too weak compared to Hot. 105.9 has a powerful signal and even though they are likely not going to do much with the station, my thinking is they are doing it to take some of the ratings away from Hot. In the end though, Hot will win.

Clear Channel was forced, due to a roll-back on ownership limits, to put 105.9 into a divestment trust. From the format announcement from Clear Channel Austin head Pam McKay, it sounds like maybe they have figured out a way to move it out of the trust and back to Clear Channel, unless the format change is just a way of making the property more desirable for a sale to say Univision.

I do think for this particular format, 105.9 is a better signal than 93.3. Also, does anyone else expect the Hot simulcast on the 99.7 translator to end soon and be replaced with either a simulcast of 590 or with one of the HD formats like Mega?

Would make sense for Hot to drop it's simulcast on it's translator at 99.7 and simulcast one of the HD channels on the frequency, if 93.3 covers the market well what's the use in simulcasting on it. I say go sign on an Urban AC/Old School & R&B format on 99.7 and put it on one of the HD channels to cater to that adult audience.

Fred, from looking at the map I see what you're talking about as far as the coverage for 93.3, I was thinking pretty much of the signal just covering the Austin market in general and didn't think much of the cities east and south of the city. I see your point, 105.9 does have the better signal as far as covering the east and south where 93.3 doesn't cover very well.

The Beat doesn't have to win the battle. With no jocks, it's cheap to run. Think big picture beyond the hip hop battle. It's CC vs. Emmis. If the Beat can take Hot down a couple of pegs, that helps CC overall and hurts Emmis overall. I think that's the goal. Hot may very well still have better ratings than the Beat, but their ratings will take a hit, and that might just be enough for CC to consider the Beat a success.

That would be so cool if they put Mega on that frequency. I love that station and listen to it online just about every day.

I found out that you guys are exactly right. One of the personalities from a DFW area radio station inquired about a position, and The Beat's PD said that they were not looking to hire any personalities at this time. 105.9 The Jukebox.

What I find hilarious is that the Beat is making fun of Hot and it's staff. I guess you can say whatever you want about the competition when you have no staff of your own.

....KDHT doesn't cover all of the market counties south and east of Austin.

Actually, fred, in a side-by-side comparison both stations have that problem:
KDHT: www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM598589.html
KFMK: www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM272875.html

But while they may compare favorably on paper there's a reason for the 99.7 translator. 93.3 has some problems within the Austin metro, with much of that due to the greater distance from their transmitter. I only point this out because coverage maps can be deceiving and I don't disagree at all that KDHT is definitely in the rimshot category.

Replying to X-Man's suggestion:
I say go sign on an Urban AC/Old School & R&B format on 99.7 and put it on one of the HD channels to cater to that adult audience.

Sounds reasonable if that's the way they wanted to go but there's one technicality; translators aren't allowed to originate their own programming. That's easily overcome, though. Rebroadcasting an HD2 station on a translator is within the scope of the rules.

Hey jd, I guess I didn't word that right. I actually meant that 93.3 could carry an Urban AC or Old School & R&B format on it's HD channels or it's Old School Hip Hop that it has and simulcast it on it's translator at 99.7. I know stations can't put original program on a translator, I didn't realize that when I posted it, that's my badd:)
