Hot or not?

In Myrtle Beach, SC, the "soft rock" station doesn't seem to be calling itself that any more. And when I was listening, I think the 70s music was gone.

There is no other AC since the soft AC went Movin'. There is an easy listening station which a Sun News article claims is soft AC, but the music mix is what other radio stations call standards.

And yet I heard these songs at 9 in the morning--"Music" by Madonna and "Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi. Also the new Nickelback song. I don't think this was a special show like the Lite 102.9 "80s at 8" (a terrible time for loud music first thing in the morning) or their classic hits lunch, whatever it is/was called.

This was before all-Christmas, if they are doing that.

So is this station Hot AC, or how do you draw the line?
 
Yeah, they've definitely gone hot if they're playing those songs you heard. Those are Hot AC staples and almost never heard on mainstream AC. Is there another station in the market which has moved (or preparing to move) toward the older end of the adult demo? Or has something happened with the CHR station in the market? Or is this just a boneheaded decision at the wrong time?

I have been having a discussion on the Hot AC board about how I am ditching Hot AC for Bright AC on the station I do music for, and this situation reminds me a lot of why I'm leaving the format. This station is in danger of becoming the "lame music station" in that market and losing its identity. At least with soft AC they had ownership of a demo, since there were no other stations like them in the area.

There was a softer AC. It went Movin', which means R&B, and can be soft but doesn't have to be.

Another poster on this board argues that the easy listening station is now soft AC. A Sun News reporter claimed they were soft AC in an article, and when I emailed him, he understood but said a ratings-related site called it soft AC. I disagree because there's very little AC. There are songs AC stations might play, but no one calls that AC any more. It's very close to the Dial Global standards music mix, and more standards-leaning than Timeless Classics.
 
I don't particularly remember right off-hand, but I want to say that Arbitron doesn't recognize "easy listening" as its own specific format. They may have to choose Soft AC by default in their Arbitron station info. Then again my memory may be slightly eggnog impaired so I could be wrong.

No, they call it "B/EZ". Which makes no sense. Why not just "easy"?

That station is I would describe it instrumental easy listening, classical, and (at night) religious.
 
It's official. Someone on Wikipedia changed the station to Hot AC. That's not to say it is, because it could just be an opinion like the ones expressed here.

I found another site where it's called Top 40. So what is "adult contemporary"? Jack stations.

The easy listening station isn't even shown there.
 
Yeah, these format descriptions are applied so differently by different publications. The key to me is the demographics. For example, AC, Hot AC and CHR attract a similar audience -- 60-70% women, less than 25% ethnic -- with the only difference being the average age of their listeners. On the other hand, Rhythmic AC attracts more men and more ethnic listeners, similar to Rhythmic Oldies and Rhythmic CHR. So, all the Rhythmics could be grouped together with their differences also being the average age. However, the industry seems to want to group Rhythmic AC's with Mainstream and Hot AC's, Rhythmic Oldies with Mainstream Oldies and Classic Hits, and Rhythmic CHR's with Mainstream CHR's.
 
Yes, you are correct. Rhythmic AC leans women; about 58% of the audience is women, according to the latest Arbitron Audience Composition Report online. However, mainstream and Hot AC are 65% women. I should have phrased it differently before. Rhythmic AC has a higher proportion of male listeners than do mainstream and Hot AC.
 
I've never heard the format. I read that it included a lot of Madonna.

Now men think Madonna looks sexy, but as to whether they like to hear her sing ...

What I've heard is that the only AC men like leans toward rock. There's no such format any more, but there used to be.
 
That may be what you've heard, but doesn't necessarily mean it's a fact.
