Here's Your "Free" Problem
> Well, WTAM is severly vunerable on the talk side. It's easy

> Hannity, Phil Hendrie and Jay Severin, add (decent) local
> talent, and BINGO!
That's an interesting combo, and not one I see Infinity mounting...though Infinity does air Beck on his "flagship" station, WPHT/1210 Philadelphia, where he moved from Tampa. (He apparently has family in that region.)
No, the problem here is simple.
Is "Free FM", the concept, centered around political talk to any degree?
You'd guess there's some of it, as Severin's newly announced Infinity show is clearly of that ilk. But the "Free FM" concept is being tied, at least in informed speculation, with "hot talk" shows like the ones about to be mounted by David Lee Roth and Adam Carolla, Howard Stern's most visible potential replacements. (I say "potential", because neither has reportedly signed a final contract, and Carolla hasn't even started anything yet. DLR is reportedly rehearsing in a NYC studio, if you believe Stern.)
Can an "FM talk" station exist with sex/hot/entertainment talk in morning drive, a political talk show in afternoons (it'd be Severin, by the way, that's his time slot), and a mix in between?
In San Francisco, the "Free FM" talk station about to debut there on 106.9 FM has been rumored to be either interested in, or actually hiring, former FM morning shock jock Darien O'Toole, who did morning drive at another Bay Area station some years ago. Ms. O'Toole's tagline was "ovaries with attitude". That's not exactly a political/issues show.
We'll have to see how it all plays out. (And somewhere in there, Liz Wilde, if you're still reading this board...you're probably talking to an Infinity station somewhere in America about a new gig. Maybe here, in Cleveland?
