Could the 923freefm.com domain be reserved for WXTM (and not WXRK/NYC?)

That's a New York Free

Freebird? Free lunch?

:D

No, I tend to think it's indeed headed for WXRK...which is certainly rumored to be taking the "Free FM" brand, presumably after the departure of Howard Stern. (One can only imagine what he's going to say about this...he's already threatened to put on dry run tapes of his supposed NYC replacement, ex-"Van Halen" rocker David Lee Roth...)

The Mighty Blog of Fun(tm) covers it here:

As noted, no rumors yet about WXTM or any Cleveland Infinity station taking a "Free" ride...

Re: That's a New York Free

A whois search on the registration of 923freefm.com shows it was registered by Infinity's counsel in NYC at their corporate HQ.

Apologies for being dumb, but what is this "Free FM" thing?

He's PD for a CHR somewhere in NY.

As reported in AllAccess today (and speculated elsewhere on the Internet), Infinity is reportedly set to launch "Free FM" as a nationwide FM talk brand.

This includes rebranding existing FM talk stations as "Free FM" (i.e. Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Washington DC, etc.), and launching new talk stations on existing Infinity FM stations under that name (i.e. New York's WXRK).

Re: That's a New York Free

From Radio Business Report, 10/18/05

"Free FM has more to do about Jay Severin
The big buzz earlier today was about Infinity launching “Free FM” FM talk stations across the country on 22 stations. Infinity CEO Joel Hollander says that’s “Somebody just throwing stuff out there. It more has to do with Jay Severin (from WTKK-FM Boston), which we are putting out an announcement on today. We’re going to be announcing which stations he’s going to be on. I don’t know why they mixed it up so bad.” Hollander says some major Severin affiliates will be announced. “Free FM” was apparently just registered as a protection. Says Hollander: “They were protecting some URLs and other things a while ago and there’s nothing there - - don’t worry about it.” "

Smokescreen.... maybe. Who knows?

Add this to the list, from dcrtv.com:

DCRTV reports that www.1067freefm.com has also been registered by CBS/Infinity for longtime FM hot talker WJFK/106.7 Washington, another Stern outlet. This despite the station having been imaged forever as "106.7 WJFK" - even resisting the "Live" branding of crosstown "Live 105.7" in Baltimore, now with the WHFS calls.

It has to be with WXRK, no doubt about it.

Well, WTAM is severly vunerable on the talk side. It's easy for CBS here - put on a station with Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Phil Hendrie and Jay Severin, add (decent) local talent, and BINGO!

As for which station in the cluster, take your pick BESIDES WDOK, ok? (ha!)

Wow, that's...really imaginative. Same name across the country. THAT'S never been done before.

Excuse me while I beat my head against the door.

Here's Your "Free" Problem

That's an interesting combo, and not one I see Infinity mounting...though Infinity does air Beck on his "flagship" station, WPHT/1210 Philadelphia, where he moved from Tampa. (He apparently has family in that region.)

No, the problem here is simple.

Is "Free FM", the concept, centered around political talk to any degree?

You'd guess there's some of it, as Severin's newly announced Infinity show is clearly of that ilk. But the "Free FM" concept is being tied, at least in informed speculation, with "hot talk" shows like the ones about to be mounted by David Lee Roth and Adam Carolla, Howard Stern's most visible potential replacements. (I say "potential", because neither has reportedly signed a final contract, and Carolla hasn't even started anything yet. DLR is reportedly rehearsing in a NYC studio, if you believe Stern.)

Can an "FM talk" station exist with sex/hot/entertainment talk in morning drive, a political talk show in afternoons (it'd be Severin, by the way, that's his time slot), and a mix in between?

In San Francisco, the "Free FM" talk station about to debut there on 106.9 FM has been rumored to be either interested in, or actually hiring, former FM morning shock jock Darien O'Toole, who did morning drive at another Bay Area station some years ago. Ms. O'Toole's tagline was "ovaries with attitude". That's not exactly a political/issues show.

We'll have to see how it all plays out. (And somewhere in there, Liz Wilde, if you're still reading this board...you're probably talking to an Infinity station somewhere in America about a new gig. Maybe here, in Cleveland? :D)

Not Even A First For Infinity, or The Format

> Wow, that's...really imaginative. Same name across the

Not to step on your sarcastic wit here, my friend, but it's even been done BY INFINITY before. In the SAME FORMAT.

At least three Infinity FM talk stations are known as "Live (frequency)" - "Live 105.3" (KLLI/Dallas), "Live 97.1" (WKRK/Detroit) and "Live 105.7" (WHFS/Baltimore). I'm sure I'm forgetting one.

At some point, it was speculated that Infinity would spread the "Live" brand to all of its FM talkers, but that never happened.
