HOT106

I briefly tuned into WBRU today to see if there was the usual Fathers Day onslaught of shout-outs to the ACI was on and was thinking of their Sunday programming vs HOT106 and even HOT106 vs JAMN. JAMN apparently has started to play some rhythmic stuff like Britney Spears but regardless, they've never promoted themselves in any ethnic way. They're basically a CHR station that plays hip hop and r&b. HOT on the other hand doesn't seem to know what it is and frankly this whole "we've got a geeky looking white guy programming" running joke borders on offensive at times with D-Pain's afro wig and jumping around the parking lot. It's almost as if he's mocking the format. What direction should they go and will they even last as a format once Providence is in a PPM world?

Jam'n 94.5 sounds totally WEAK and AWFUL for the kind of station they are, or should I say, WERE. What is the point of having Kiss 108 in Boston if Jam'n is going to play "Hip-hop and today's hit music"? At least Hot 106 still sounds more urban than Jam'n. Hot should continue to sound as urban as they can. Jam'n with their recent changes should bring a lot more listeners to Hot 106, unless Hot 106 does something really stupid like Jam'n did. This is Hot 106's chance to shine, if they keep playing true hip-hop and R&B. If Hot 106 did what Jam'n did, they would be going against another Citidel station, 92 PRO FM. Unless Clear Channel plans to change Kiss 108's format, maybe focus them more on pop rock for example, then why would they make Jam'n the station for hip-hop AND today's hit music?

Maybe there's some research that shows a hip hop audience is into certain other artists. I don't know. I don't see any reason to mix CHR in with the format. I'm sure CHR audiences are into some country but that doesn't mean you play it unless the song itself crosses over. Urban radio can be such a joke though unless the right people are doing it.

It is another one of those consultant-driven trends that has been hitting bigger markets over the last several years. Two "Hip-Hop and More" or "Hip-Hop and Today's Hottest Hits" formats that have had some success:
1. WBBM B-96/Chicago
2. Wired 96.5/Philadelphia

And recently, New York's Now 92.3 (featuring former Kix 106 night guy Mojo/Tic Tac in PM drive), although it does not have the moniker, seems to have that same format.

Hmmmmm...Jamn goes from 4.7 in march PPM numbers to 5.8 in the may PPM numbers (4th place). Yeah, those changes were bad.... ::)

Well, if it gets the ratings, that's all that matters to them.  I like some hip-hop and current R&B, but wish we had a true urban station like Power 105.1 in NYC, that focused just on hip-hop and R&B.  If only every station in a market could be different, unique, and not play the same songs heard on other stations, like the format crossover crap for example.  Yeah right, like this would ever happen.  (sigh)  ::)

jay....in a perfect world, that would be good; but not every market is going to be able to float a station like Power 105.1 because the draw/listeners won't be there

Yes I understand that, I was just saying, would be nice to have a station like that around here, but I'm sure NYC has a great audience for an urban hip-hop and R&B station, with the hip-hop popularity and heritage there. It's cool that we can listen to many stations online. I wonder if there is a survey that measures the amount of people in a market who listen to out of market stations online, and what stations they listen to. Maybe that would help with research for a possible new station or format in a market.

Maybe it's working for JAMN and KISS but theoretically I don't see why an urban station owned by the same company as a CHR in the same market would try to eat into the other's audience. Maybe to steal away certain demographics the CHR doesn't want? But then I know about as much about hip hop as I do about quantam physics.
