Hotel Cable Report - Portland, ME - 2/3/2012

I had a recent stay at the Clarion Hotel on Congress Street in Portland, ME. Depsite have the dreaded LodgeNet service and remote, the cable looked like it was nearly identical to the typical Time-Warner Cable of Portland line-up:

The channels that aren't listed were blank with snow. I compared the Time-Warner lineup with that of the set at the same time at Titan TV, using 04101 as the zip code. The channels that were there were the same, although some captions were old on the TV. They still had WPXT-TV as "WB" in the corner. So no, there was no CMT or Travel Channel I saw...but this lineup is still better than the "cable" at the LaQuinta nearby. There's was the typical 4 ESPN stations (1, 2, News and Classic) and only 6, 8, 10, 13 and 23 for broadcast stations.

CMT and Travel used to be part of the basic TWC package but are now in a separate tier. Like other hotels that rely on Time Warner Cable's legacy analog cable service, the Clarion will either have to get tuning adapters for each room (provided the hotel's cabling can reliably pass the full bandwidth required for dependable digital service) or invest in their own SMATV system (which has very limited channel capacity compared to analog cable) when TWC goes all-digital.

The coax was flimsy on the LCD TV in our room. The picture was HORRIBLE on channels 4 to 6, to the point they were unwatchable. I fiddled with the coax on the back and eventually got it to clean up. The only picture adjustment I could make on the remote was the aspect ratio, changing "JUST" to the proper 4:3 for the analog channels (the bars on the sides don't bother me). I was at the point to where I would've bought a short coax and replaced the one going from the TV. However, the cable just went into the baseboard with no wall plate. Strange!

Travel Channel used to be part of my TWC basic cable but when they weren't part of Discovery Networks and owned by Cox it was moved to digital cable and replaced with Noggin (now Nick Jr.)

As for the line-up that looks like an alright basic channel line-up.

Doesn't TWC Portland also carry CBC or CBC French (SRC) from Montreal???
Bangor and DwonEast TWC has CBC Montreal CBMT. I know TWC in York County carries two French Quebec channels.

If they do, they don't carry it on their analog service. As for York County, I know the cable company that serves Old Orchard Beach either does or did carry CKSH-TV channel 9 from Sherbrooke, PQ. To say that Old Orchard Beach turns into South Quebec in the summer is an understatement! (I lived there from 1985 to 1987 and have visited a few times since.)

A total side bar. Yes TWC in Bangor and downeast do carry the French Quebec channels. Quite often in the weekend edition of the "Bangor Daily News", there is a full page, full color ad for programming for one of the stations. Rarely do you see an ad for any type of programming in the BDN. It just makes me wonder why all the expense.

See I told you it was a side bar.

Prob off topic but when staying in Brunswick ME (round 2008) I distinctly remember the cable system having a French station from Quebec (pretty sure it was the Sherbrooke one).

Where is WGAF?

Brunswick ME cable system has CKSH on channel 10 on the cable system. It is a requirement of the franchise agreement. It is there for the large franco-american population in the area.

For other French-Canadian bases, see Old Orchard Beach (where I once lived for two years) and Biddeford (where my maternal grandmother is from).
