(Houston) Anyone remember this station?

I realize that this thread is almost a year old, but just ran across it today while I was going thru the board. If memory serves me correct, Channel 16 was on the air in the mid sixties from about 1966 to 1969. It basically played re-runs like I love lucy and leave it to beaver. I was about 10 or 11 years old then, so I really didn't pay that much attention to it, unless I didn't have anything else to watch (when I wasn't outside playing with the neighborhood kids). As I remember, the station did not have a great following, and one day it was just gone. Buddy (if you are still out there), I hope this helps give you a bit more info to answer your question.

I have an old Chron with Ann Hodges TV column from November, 1967, saying KVVV would be on the air from Alvin in early 1968. The station was licensed to Galveston but studios were just outside Alvin. I have listings from 5/69 including KVVV but by 11/69 they are gone. I don't have any more specific dates.

KHTV, channel 39, went on the air in Jan 1967, KVRL (26) in August 71 from what I have.

I never hear this mentioned anywhere. Does anybody remember back in the late 70s when channel 26's calls were KDOG? The station billed itself as K-DOG TV 26.
Anyone remember when they changed the calls? Why?

I do remember "KDOG-TV" - just because their mascot had a resemblence to my dog....

Don't recall what prompted the call sign change to KRIV, but vaguely recall reading that RIV was short for River - was the license owner "River City Broadcasting"?

All of the little tidbits of data stuck in my mind sometimes run together...

Here's the link to the Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KRIV.

Leroy Gloger had been the owner of KIKK AM-FM before buying KVRL. I always understood the calls were because he wanted to take advantage of the popularity of dogs by using photos on the station ids.

KVRL was the 4th UHF on the air in Houston. There was KNUZ-TV/39 for 8 months in 53-54, KHTV-TV also on 39, and KVVV. I don't think any of the other permitted UHFs ever made it on the air.

Did KXYZ, Channel 29 ever make it on the air?

I'll dig through the old TV Guides, but thought it was on the air for a while...

I didn't think so but I could be wrong. We didn't have a set that would receive UHF. McCarthy ran into financial difficulties I think and had to sell the hotel and AM/FM. Let us know what you find.

I was doing some surfing on this and found several sites, including the Wikipedia article, claim KTRK's original calls were KXYZ-TV for a few months; that would have been late 54, early 55. I sure don't remember that and KTRK's website doesn't mention it. McCarthy had been one of the competitors for the assignment on 13 but dropped out either before or when Houston Consolidated Television was formed by the other 4 competitors. Jesse Jones and KTRH were the lead and operating partners in Houston Consolidated Television; hence the calls that were close to KTRH from the beginning as I understand it. I don't know why McCarthy would have let them use the calls if he wasn't part of it and still operating the AM (the FM was silent thru much of the 50s).
