Houston needs another Hip Hop station!!!

All of this just makes me miss Party more and more. Hell, recently The Box doesn't mix as much as they used to anymore. Houston radio IS going to hell in a handbasket.

A lot of the same songs in the same rotation, every two hours or so. At least The Buzz is expanding a we bit. For the most part, Houston radio sucks!

Remember back in the day...? Party 100.7, Kiss 98.5 and Kiss again 103.3, ? And KRBE was probably one of the best top 40 stations around back then?

I miss them days.

Its funny, the more things change, the more they stay the same...

All of these posts about needing another hip hop station sound like the same kind of posts that were here when KLOL flipped from rock to hurban. Same words, just different demographics and radio stations.

As much as we all wish for a perfect world where there was a radio station that "kept it real" and played what each invidvidual person wanted to hear... RADIO IS A BUSINESS!!

There is a reason why there is only one hip hop station in Houston... MONEY!

The Box does what it does well and they've been doing it for a long time. How's this for a eyeopener, they are #1, 6+ in the last PPM because they are doing it correctly, meaning that they are playing what the MAJORITY of people want to hear, not a couple of hip hop junkies.

Yeah, Party played more local artists, but where did that get them? Maybe a little street cred, maybe ads from a couple local tire & rim shops, strip clubs, and smokeshops, but getting national ad dollars is where the $$ is at and a new hip hop station won't get those. My advice: try to get your hands on an internet station so you can play exactly what you want. Then in a few years when everyone has wifi in their car, they can listen to you "keep it real".

I did not understand half of what you said, but then again, unfortunately, i dont work in radio.

So what makes you think that a second hip-hop station can't do what, or nearly what, The Box does?? In other cities like Dallas, for example, there can be 2 stations that almost pull almost the same moves that The Box pulls, format-wise, and they both get decent numbers. It sounds like you are saying that that method cant work in Houston.

I see a lot of people saying Houston doesn't need another hip hop station. My guess is they say that only because they personally hate hip hop. The fact that KBXX pulls such huge numbers shows that there is plenty of room for another hip hop station.

I actually love hip hop, that's why I have everything I want to listen to on my ipod.

I never said that Houston couldn't support another hip hop station, I just don't think that anyone will commit a full powered signal (i.e. 100,000 watts) to compete with KBXX. Party tried it and did ok on 104.9 until Mega came in and took away half of their Hispanic numbers. Then the move to 93.3 was a death sentence. Plus, the majority of the time, it sounded like small market radio.

If you're going to go head to head with the Box on hip hop, you better have a LOT of money to spend so you can bring in the best programmer in the country, and then even if you do get the best programmer, you better hope that they understand Houston. After they understand Houston, you better hope they can figure out a way to wedge your station right in between KBXX and Hot to get the teens, because they are the early adopters and you can't win a hip hop battle without them.

I'm just trying to say there's a lot more that goes into getting another hipop station on the air in Houston than a couple of radio board posters wishing they had one.

It has nothing to do with personal preference about hip hop, it has to do with the almighty dollar, welcome to corporate radio.

Even in smaller market cities such as San Antonio and Austin, hip hop stations comitted to their market and have had a long staying power (about a decade), other stations that enter the maket seem to fizzle out fast. It has nothing to do with people hating hip hop. Party had absloultely no chance in hell surpassing The Box on weak signals.

Lets not forget, Houston is a way bigger market than Austin and San Antonio.

Anyway, does anybody remember how well KPTY did in the ratings when they were on 104.9?? All i know was ratings dropped when they moved to 93.3, but what was the highest number they got before the move??

I spotted a 5.8 in 18-34 in fall of 2006. 3.2 was the highest in 12+ I could find.

Well then, i just don't get why they would move the station to 93.3 in the first place if they were getting good numbers from 104.9, even if the signal wasn't all the best. But this old story is something im just starting to get.

I still hope one day this hole will be filled. These days, it sounds like The Box can play whatever hip-hop song they want and get away with it. Why?? Because they don't have anyone to compete with.
