Arbitron's Fall 2006 Red Book came out and Houston is now Market Number Six. We finaly beat Philadelphia for the #6 spot.

Dallas-Fort Worth still at #5 with 4,838,600 12+ Persons in the metro.
Houston-Galveston now #6 with 4,469,900 12+ Persons in the metro.
Philadelphia down to #7 with 4,360,200 12+ Persons in the metro.
San Antonio at #29 with 1,586,00 12+
Austin at #42 with 1,252,400 12+

Philadelphia was the #5 market for as long as I can remember. Then a couple of years ago Dallas passed Philly up. Now Houston is ahead as well.

Katrina victims who moved to Houston might have been a factor in the market ranking increase. New Orleans was the market with the steepest decline, it fell from #47 to #57.

Ya think? And here I thought it was just Astros bandwagonners relocating. Good work, Clouseau.

N.O. maybe the only southern market , that went down .

But Houston's AM stations cannot compare with Dallas'. If you drive 50 miles north of Houston at night, you can pick up Dallas better than Houston.

A little historical perspective here. H-town was in danger of falling out of the the top 10 back in the late 90's as some of the northeastern metros were getting some east coast-bias Arbitron love (Boston & DC had metro redefs). Our Arbitron rep (who spent his early career w/ Poleman/Bryant/Dastur at KRBE) got some forward looking GM's like Nancy Vaeth (Susq), Laura Morris (Infinity), Chris McMurray (Cox), Tim Davies (R1), Mark Maespohl (Uni), Winter Horton (Liberman) and even Mark Kopelman (CC) to spend the necessary bucks (a sizeable chunk) to increase the size of the metro to encompass the actual listening area West to Columbus - East to Beaumont - & North to Bryan College Station. As far as geographic metros, it doesn't get any bigger than Houston, which is a huge benefit in programming clout & billing not to mention revenue. The N.O. folks are worth their fair share, but it doesn't hurt to have friends in high places that get us first dibs on nice perks like being a PPM market, etc. ;D

Welcome! Nice to see another broadcaster here. If you know Mark, that is good enough recommendation for me!

I do have to say being the first roll-out PPM market is a mixed blessing. Some would say that getting weekly ratings which we have now gotten for the last 7 weeks (another tomorrow) is a mixed blessing. And the 70% increase in Arbitron cost is certainly a dubious "giftie" from Steve, Owen and crew!

That was a factor in Houston's growth, but adding 61,300 jobs between July 2005 and July 2006 probably didn't hurt the increase in population (Bizjournals). Houston is in a growth mode again that I haven't seen in a while. I believe over 50,000 homes are being built each year and there is no abundance of housing sitting empty. That wouldn't count apartments and condominiums that are going up everywhere and filling up as soon as they are finished.

Yeah Yeah Yeah... but what about the REALLY important question...

When will Radio-Info.com put Houston in its rightful place above Philadelphia on the list of major markets??

;D
