Houston part time Producers/Board ops/DJs

There are a lot of good part time people in this business who don't get a lot of credit for their efforts. Good part time people are hard to find. One of the key elements of a good parttimer is reliablity and punctuality. I actually feel that way about myself when I was part time. I could be counted on, like many of the old pros in this town who are out of work.

This post is to publicly acknowledge my staff.

David Sadof-many of you know him from the Buzz, KLOL and KFNC with his Hi-Fidelity show. I hired him earlier this year as the Sunday producer for KNTH/KKHT/KTEK. This man is a true professional. Without being too detailed, I have to say that he goes at great lengths to get the job done.

Miko Nelson-this lady has exceled beyond my imagination. It's her first time in radio and has responded like she has been in the business for years. I have used her voice on several commercials and promos. I can't say enough good things about her performance.

Loraine Horton-she has been in Houston radio for many years. Most of her time has been at KKHT and KTEK. She produces Saturday mornings and can handle any situation that comes her way. If a station goes off the air or if the dreaded ENCO air system goes crazy, she regains control in a short time in a cool calm demeanor.

David Chino-Saturday morning producer on KKHT. Nice voice which hardly gets used, but he can be counted on anytime.

Matt Menn-He is the KKHT Sunday morning producer, a job which he has held for 10 years.

We recently hired Kelly Hammond and my old compadre from my KILT days, Ron Samuels who has been in radio since 1965. It's good to be with him again.

There are many others in this town that don't get the recognition they deserve. Some station program directors and their assistant program directors take their weekend staff for granted. Because of that, they have to spend a lot of time always finding somebody new and training them. When a PD goes home for the weekend, he/she should feel content about the staff they have assembled and not have to worry about the station. Oh, I expect to be called when there is a problem that needs my attention or decision. However, its a good feeling to know that it is left in capable hands.

Thank you. I appreciate your efforts.

David does some part time work for us at Metro too. Hats off to all who hold down the PT gigs. They are a necessary part of this biz. At the same time, my hat is off to those who promote those part timers to full time positions when they become available. We recently did that at Metro when we put Josh Reno into a full time slot. He was such a dependable fill-in worker that we hated to give that up, but in doing so we got a good guy to fill a full time opening without having to wonder if we were making a good decision, since we already knew his work.

Good topic Chuck..

Thank you, Aunti-terrestrial. I started part time in 1972 and was part time at The Wave until I became APD at KNTH. It is my intentions never to forget where I came from.

Radio girl, KIXS in Victoria and the other stations in the Clear Channel cluster were sold. The entire staff was let go a week or two before the new owners took over. Ron tried to go back but they wouldn't consider him. Shameful!

Kevin, thats a good addendum to this topic. I have seen where a part time cat does such a good job, he gets passed over when a full time position opens. It can be a double edged sword. A part timer needs to make it known that he/she is interested in moving up. I did not mention Lana Joseph, who was part time and moved into the 7PM-Midnight position on KKHT. This was her first job in radio and performed so well, that when the shift opened, Operations manager Jim Darling decided she was worth moving up. His philosophy is to look at our part time first when a full time slot opens. I agree.

Chuck, i really miss you on Sunday mornings on the Wave. Kelly McClain has a nice voice, but thats all. She doesn't communicate. At least when listening to you i felt like you were talking to me. That is the difference between what is called personality and just a voice. Kelly is just a voice. She doesnt communicate. I never understood why you were replaced.

Saturday morning has seen several voices come and go since you left. Its not the same. Will you ever go back to playing music on the radio?

Nichole, I appreciate it. I won't say that I will never play music again on the radio. None of us know what the future can bring. I do enjoy playing music on the radio. I just don't like the restrictions that go along with it. I understand consistency, however I think it is foolish to make all of the voices sound the same and say exactly the same things. I feel listeners enjoy the uniqueness of the air personality.

As far as my replacement is concerned, Kelly has a very nice voice. I've known her for quite a few years. There was a rumor at the time, since Kelly was on KODA Sunday mornings back in 2002, it would help Sunday morning ratings on The Wave. Of course, that sounds silly when you consider by that time she had been off Sunday mornings for four years. Whatever the reason, it was the beginning of the end for my time at The Wave. I began making plans as soon as the new schedule came out and saw I was off the Sunday shift. My time on the air had been wittled down to two hours between the public service program "Houston Weekend Magazine" at 5AM and "The Dave Koz Show" at 8AM. I know how to take a hint.

Roger Gray left Houston after the sale of 97.1 fm, and went to Dallas. There he worked for General Motors in their Public Relations department, i believe. He then went to Tyler, Texas, where he had his own radio show on KTBB. That show went off the air, i believe in March of 2007, and i am not sure where he is now, but i would love to find out!

Good Info. I guess there is just no place for a middle of the road guy any more.

I sometimes listen to some doofus named Pags on KTRH some time when scanning channels. It really makes me miss intelligent discourse where Gray would take either the pro or the con and require you to prove your point.

Hi Rabbi! I haven't forgotten. Can you believe it? It's been about 10 years since I've seen you. Faith Matters was a wonderful program. You guys had the right energy for the show. Hope to see you again sometime. Shalom!

All of this talk about the 97 talk era is making me crave some good radio! I have loved talk radio since I was a kid. I grew up listening to WGN in Chicago and was shocked by the radio here in Houston when I arrived about 12 years ago. Then Roger set up his station. 97talk was a staple of my work day. I enjoy entertaining, informed talk. I don't need to listen to someone I agree with, as long as they have logical arguments based on facts and not "common sense". It really pains me to not have any local talk worth listening to.

A "thank you" like that to the people "behind the scenes" is great to see.

If my former boss had ever done something like that, I might have stayed in radio instead of going to the tech industry.

(4 years, '91-94, at KRPT-FM in Anadarko, OK. Started out running the board, then was "promoted" to doing my own show)
