I was just in Houston not to long ago and radio there is all right.

KHMX-Mix 96.5-what an awesome station great mix and jocks.
KRBE-104.1 krbe-Cool station, music, jocks.
KKBQ-The New 93Q?-Hasnt this station been around for a while? Last time I was in Houston 00' there were calling themselves that. And another thing QUIT BASHING YOU COMPETITION. Who cares about how many commercials KILT played. Its music and jocks that make a station to me. and also ratings at KILT are higher than KKBQ- doesnt that tell you Q should just shut up. Dont yall agree?

I agree that 93Q should change there ways of slogans, seems like every time I tune to them they say something like that. Most of the time when I tune to country its kilt or kixs, kzam KTXN(those other 3 in Victoria) I acually liked what krbe was playing over saturday night last weekend, some old school hiphop. Havnt heard of some of them songs in a while, plus they did add some dance in there ;).

KKBQ-FM has been the "New 93Q" since February 2nd 1983 when they changed call letters to KKBQ from KYND and the "Beautiful Music" format. Twenty two years is a long time to be new.

KHMX-Sucks...take KRBE and KTBZ put them in a blender and you've got MIX 96.5 or as I like to call it complete crap!

KRBE-I personally don't care for them, but I think they serve their demographic well. All 12 year olds want to hear is Hollaback Girl.

In today's trend KKBQ tied KILT. This is amazing considering most everyone on this board seems to think KILT is the far superior station (and they very well could be). This means bahing the competition and talking about how many commercials they play could be working for KKBQ. If this is what it takes to keep the race close, they should keep doing it.

"This means bashing the competition and talking about how many commercials they play could be working for KKBQ. If this is what it takes to keep the race close, they should keep doing it."

I don't think that's what's doing it. Neither station amounts to a shadow of the stations they once were. Both are floundering. After Hudson & Harrigan leave the air, there's nothing going on at KILT that you can't hear in any other city, on any other country station. Listen, closely, and you can hear H & H's hands being tied behind their backs. Not pretty.

Over at 93Q, the numbers they get are in direct proportion to how good, or bad, KILT has been for any given quarter, or trend. Instead of carping about how satellite radio is infringing on local radio's turf, satellite radio should launch a few charges of their own, regarding how terrestrial radio is trying to imitate satellite.

Okay, now I have to ask, because funnily enough, my 12 year-old girl asked me this evening, "What the heck is a Hollaback Girl?" I told her it was nasty. She rolled her eyes and said, "Yeah, I figured that, but what does it mean?" I was on the spot, so I asked her if her laundry was put away yet. She dematerialized like a kid in a Star Trek transporter before my very eyes, there one second, gone the next, stirring particles left behind.

psssst...So, what the heck is a Hollaback Girl? :)

This race has been up and down for both stations over the past couple of years now. As a matter of fact, last year KKBQ actually went ahead of KILT, shortly after "Country Legends 97.1" debuted. The Cox combo of KKBQ & KTHT is hurting KILT, because they losing in younger and older demos to Cox. KKBQ's new morning show is also helping them. It's new and fresh and drawing more younger listeners. However, Cox has been "KILT-Bashing" for a couple of years now. I don't think that is the reason that Cox is winning. It is still STUPID to mention your competition by name on the air. It goes back to the old philosophy that bad publicity is better than no publicity at all. Also, you don't necessarily make yourself look better by making others look bad. It just makes you look petty and jealous. Cox needs to build on their success, and just leave KILT alone. Focus on your own image, music jocks. They will be better off in the long run.
______________

Does the KILT bashing just include commercials or do they mention other elements? I think a station could get away with bashing a competitors spotloads. Anything else probably does more harm than good, criticizing another stations air talent comes across as mean and usually backfires.

I'm pushing 40 and I love "Hollaback Girl". It's the best pop song of 2005 so far.

Only the spotload. KILT = Commercials. 93Q = Music.
______________

According to http://www.urbandictionary.com

holla back girl
A girl that is willing to be treated like a doormat or booty call. She is a girl that will allow guys to do whatever they want with her and will just wait for them to 'holla back' at them.
Jermaine fools around with Aisha. Thinking he likes her, she waits around for him to make contact with her again.

Must agree with this wholeheartedly. It's one of the basics, like forward motion or two beats into the ramp.

The other guys? What other guys?

Reply: Lord help us all in the industry if Houston is considered all right. What horrid radio is out there? Where is the Hollaback Girl when I need a date?

KKBQ has not been "New" since 1983. They dropped that by 1984. That New branding came along when Cox took over in 1999. Supposedly it stands for New Country music, but whos supposed to know that. Stations reimage every couple years or so... this one hasn't.

Strange this old post has resurfaced. Today, KKBQ still uses their "New" slogan and bashes KILT for commercials. KILT, in return, has fired back with "The other station is saying that we play lots of commercials. Isn't THAT a commercial?"

Both stations still are terrible, especially since KILT let go most of their on-air staff and pulled the classic country show on Sunday nights. Not to mention the state of country music, if you want to call it that, is horrible since most songs has duped down to the style of hip hop where instead of Hennesey, it's Bud Light, TuPac is replaced by Hank Williams (none of those artists listen to Hank Williams), and Mercedes are replaced with pickup trucks.

KHMX isn't doing any better, they sound like a CHR when there is already a CHR on 95.7 owned by the same company.

Wow.... didn't look at the dates on all the posts, and when I hit the post by Mike_O, I definately did a double-triple take!! Has Houston radio gotten any better, definately not. Does Houston have some great talent that could make radio in the area better, if not great again, I gotta say yes. Will the suits pull their heads out of their........ sandboxes.... and see the light..... very doubtful.

I miss KIKK. ;D

Both stations sound pale to me. Where's the Texas and Red Dirt Country? Adding some local stuff to the daily rotation wouldn't hurt. They were probably the last pair of stations in the state to play Randy Rogers Band when they took off. I always try to listen to stations like K-TEX 106 when I am in the outskirts of the city. Now that station has the right mix of country music.

My bad. I stumbled on this somehow and replied... realized after the fact how old this thread was

Don't be embarrassed. Someone on this board recently posted on several threads that last saw activity in 2005.
