Houston radio power question

Just wondering is all of Houston stations in full power? Seems like since they took it down the first time I can't really pick up Houston as well out in Lavaca county as I use to. 93Q I use to get HD and 957 and 965, Now on 93Q it's usually KROM, and today I tried KRBE it was mostly KSAH.

I live just to the south of you in Victoria, and I work in Calhoun County, and over the last week I have noticed that I've been getting San Antonio FMs clearer than those in Houston. Magic 105-3 has been coming in well, while 95-7 The Spot is getting beat by La Ley, and KSAH is coming in more so than KRBE. 94-5 The Buzz is losing its battle with the Classic Rock Q94-5 in the Valley as well.

All I can guess is it must be rather long term atmospheric conditions. It's just not logical Houston stations have decreased power.

Springtime in the south means lots of signal intrusion from distant FM and TV stations.
Typically, it's a morning thing with the distant signals fading before noon.
Things will get back to normal within a month or so.

The weather is warmer and more humid, which means tropo conditions at night and early morning will be kicking up. Direction can shift depending on weather conditions and temperature layers. Pretty common in the Gulf Coast area.

For some time now I've been getting KISS HD and Magic 105.3 HD and KBPA HD very good better then Houston HD.

This subject was discussed many years ago on this board. A lot of folks have come and gone since that time. It's called Tropospheric Ducting. When this occurs, it extends the range of FM radio, UHF and VHF signals. William Hepburn has a great website that forecasts the Tropospheric Ducting. It shows the current map and a week forecast. If you examine Sunday and Monday, conditions were favorable for signals being affected. You will see that by Tuesday, it was moving east and off shore in Texas. Here is the link:

Houston stations were coming in great to the southwest last night. I was hearing ESPN 97-5 and 100.7 The Word (Winnie, TX rimshots) very clear in El Campo and Ganado.

I was pulling in 95-7 The Spot and 94-5 The Buzz in Victoria on a very clear basis. I had to check to make sure I was in Victoria and not at 59 and Polk.

March into May is Prime-Time for "tropospheric ducting." When I lived in NE Indiana, I would receive FM broadcasts from Missouri, Kansas, Kentucky, Georgia, and Arkansas - on LOCAL frequencies! I heard the KC Royals baseball broadcast on several occasions - in northern Indiana. Also, I received TV signals from Nebraska, Texas, and Wyoming - but those days are gone since most VHF TV channels have been transferred to UHF channels, so ducting is possible, but much less likely.

I am familiar with Tropospheric Ducting, but it is fun to report on the station grabs.

I understand that these particular catches are not permanent.
