Randy Houston is selling Adult Standards (1600) WTZQ/Hendersonville according to AllAccess.com. Houston is selling the stock of Houston Broadcasting to the revocable living trusts of Ardell and Remelle Sink for $40,000.

If memory serves me correctly, Randy actually bought the station from the Sink family several years ago, around 2001 or so, when Ardell spun WTZQ and WISE. Also, if I'm remembering correctly, the Sinks financed the purchase, meaning Randy may well still owe them a significant note. I haven't seen the deal yet, but my assumption would be that the deal was actually $40k plus forgiveness of debt.

Yes, that is right. Houston took over when the Sinks sold him WTZQ and spun off WISE to Saga Communications. Before that WISE/WTZQ was owned by Wilcox Travel Agency in Asheville.

I think you'll find on the standards board that no one actually calls that mess they're playing "standards" anymore. Let's hope the new owners change to an actual standards format and, better yet, move to Asheville.

I seriously doubt you could "move" WTZQ anywhere. And then what? 1000 watts at most and maybe 25 watts at night that WTZQ is SUPPOSED to run.

It does seem possible to move WTZQ somewhere, since Charlotte's 1600 WGIV went dark a few years back. But, maybe some other 1600 stations have already taken advantage of WGIV's departure. I can remember when WTZQ (then WHVL) had at least 2 towers near the intersection of Greenville and Spartanburg Highways just south of downtown H'ville. I don't remember their power, but it must have been more then day and/or night with multiple towers and it was obviously directional.

I worked there in the 79-81 time frame, and again briefly in late 83. They were 1KW till 81-82, then went 5KW till their move to the present location. Very tight pattern in those days protecting WFIS. The 5KW had a heck of an ERP to the North, heard very well up near Erwin, Tn.
