Houston Will Soon Be "Point"-less...

Cox has registered the domain 1069TheZone.com over the weekend, and it appears that there is a matching Twitter account to go with it. It appears that they are going to blow up the 80's "Point" format and turn it into a classic rock station to compete with 94.5 The Buzz (source).

Your thoughts?

So what other format could "Zone" be associated with? AC? Hot AC, perhaps? Maybe spoken-word?

"The Zone" is such a generic branding of a radio station.....

Perhaps:

"Hot Talk... Real Rock..... 1069 the Zone"

"Your Home For the 90s and More ....1069 The Zone"

"Houston's Rock Station....1069 The Zone"

"Your #1 for Hip-Hop....1069 The Zone"

In the late 90's DFW had a "Zone" station which was Adult Alternative, FWIW.

The Point's 80's format has dragged on for too long, and the playlist is now colliding with sibling KGLK. I see 106.9 moving up a decade to the 90's (perhaps similar to the "90's and more" stunt KROI had in 2004) or going to some format that will target the huge numbers KTBZ is getting.

A flip to such a format would probably be the final nail in the coffin for the current incarnation of KHJK.

I'm not holding my breath, although any change would be welcome. A flip of 106.9 has been speculated about for years, and nothing ever happens.

I agree with Mediafrog. Cox won't compete with itself on Eagle. They have, in a few other markets, launched a rock format which has succeeded.

In Jacksonville, FL for example, their format pushed CC to change their rock station which included the popular Lex & Terry morning show.

It's most likely they will attack KTBZ in some fashion, and will include serious TV marketing...a Cox tradition.

I don't think the AAA incarnation of KHJK needs a final nail in it's coffin. Just look at their numbers. At this point, putting the old Rock 103.7 back on would be an improvement.

It's about time we got a little shake up on the radio dial. I was so over The Point about 8 years ago. They had some good stuff going in its early days with the live mixshow from The Roxy and..... well I guess thats about it. Them playing the same 20 songs over and over got old real quick. How that station survived 10 years (this month) is anyones guess. Just a very flat presentation overall. But thats just because of the way it was programmed. Very cheap and no imagination. Good riddance Point. You were an insult to a decade of great music.

I'm hoping the playlist will be similar to 99.5 KISS in San Antonio but it will probably lean more towards Alternative if they want to compete with the Buzz

I hoping a good rap hiphop station playing mostly stuff before 2003

Man did you put that very well. I loved the Point back in around 2003-04. I did not like it when it was exactly the same in 2008 and 2009.

I agree with rage's assessment that the Point's format was an insult to that decade of radio. But, I can't see them getting any better by moving up to the 90's. There hasn't been that much decent music out in the past two decades. So, if they did that, it would probably amount to another repetitive playlist of another 20 songs. Where, oh where, has imagination gone in radio programming?

A fifth sports station? On FM? Look at ESPN's numbers. They can't cut it on FM. What good would another FM sports do? More lame sports shows.

It's interesting this comes up as I was just commenting on the Tampa board today about 101.5 The Point, which is pretty much run like its sister station 106.9 (for the time being, anyway) in Houston. I remember how years ago, they played hardly any Michael Jackson, and I'm wondering if his death has encouraged Cox to open up the playlist a little. Anyway, get ready for the "new" ______ (because Cox is going to drive home the fact that the station is "new" - even five years from now - you've been warned...)

and throwing in 90's music made absolutely no sense, like that was going to improve anything. There was so much more music they hadn't even played from the 80s. That shows that programming had absolutely no clue to the people they play to OR programmed it with a playlist to their own liking, songs they could tolerate.

I'm getting older and maybe a little slower on the uptake, but trust me. It was a joke.

Lord knows we need a shake up in the Houston Market! Please Let this be true for a change. AN Alternative,CHR,Sports or Even Hip Hop would be great.... Not sure of the 4 which is needed most but geez it would make the wake up the sleeping city. But does cox have $$$$$?????
