Houston's low power channel 34 back on?

Noticed that the low power Channel 34 in Houston was testing this morning, with color bars/tone and "KVIT-CA CH34 Dewalt, TX" ID.

This station previously carried the "Almavision" Spanish language religious network, but has been off the air for the past five or six months. Perhaps they are about to relaunch with something new? Or could this be the future home for Azteca America, which apparently is getting the boot from full power KAZH at the end of June?

Any idea what may end up on TV57?

I've heard either here on this site or somewhere else about a new TV network starting up (retro TV or something like that).

Thoughts?

RTN -Retro Telelvision Network is launching national later this summer. Several places like Salt Lake City, Vegas, and Seattle already have it. I would like to see it on 57, it would be smart for both Pappas and RTN, but maybe even KNWS could be a possibility. They been steadily adding classic TV, they add "Bonanza" starting Saturday night, and most of which is a CBS/Paramount product, the main provider of RTN programming when they do go national.

Who is running RTN in Seattle? Some RTN programming does run on KQUP channel 24 in Pullman, WA, but that's on the other side of the state and serves the Spokane market, not Seattle.

this may be what I am thinking of, may have gotten it mixed up with Spokane.

According to their filings with the FCC, they went silent in October due to transmitter problems and filed a Silent STA in November. Last month, they were granted an extension of the Silent STA. They intend to be back on the air no later than May 30th.

I still cannot understand how the FCC can allow TV stations being spaced this closed...with 34 (TBN) being over in the Beaumont area and is a full power, and VIT being a Class A (150kw) LP TV, this is still tooo close for NTSC spacing...that and the 33 LP translator that was on Sr Road....(I havent noticed...is it still there? I see PAX filed for a DTV LP on that channel as well)

FCC database has KVIT-CA running 40kw.

KBPX-LP is still there. Never left.

Last I saw, KPXB-DT (currently on channel 5) will wind up on channel 32 after the analog switch-off. KTRK-DT (currently on 32) will wind up on the old channel 13 analog allocation. Perhaps KPXB will simply take over the old KTRK digital transmitter?

The KVIT-LP transmitter near Dewalt is over 80 miles from the KITU-TV transmitter near Mauriceville. Add the fact that neither KVIT nor KITU operate at maximum power (KVIT: 40 kW vs. max 150 kW; KITU: 1170 kW vs. max 5000 kW) and you can see why interference isn't a factor. KITU's Grade B signal barely reaches Chambers County.

An article in the HBJ says 34 will be the new AZA affiliate.

Guess my original hunch was correct! However a big comedown for Azteca America. At my Cy-Fair location Channel 34's signal is quite inferior to the other Missouri City LP's on 21, 30, 33, and 43. I think the promised local news operation will turn out to be vaporcasting, given the limited OTA reach with no cable carriage.

KVIT was still testing a week after my original post, but no further sign of it during a couple of checks the past few days.

Still wonder what KAZH will program, and what language. With the large Asian population in greater Houston, you would think programming in Vietnamese/Chinese/Hindi/Urdu/Arabic might make its way on the air, but perhaps those demographics are already well served by the satellite services.

I read somewhere (here?) that KAZH was going indie, but they didn't say what language.

Yeah, I'm sure you want a Hindi station - here's a plot summary for all the movies they'd play:
- Boy meets girl
- Parents do not approve
- Singing and dancing ensue

:)

( That's a running joke between my co-workers, the majority of whom are from India )
