Houston's Spanish language radio stations.....

I have to agree with most of you, Doe's Houston need yet another Spanish language radio facility?

Let's look at this issue constructively, NO, Houston most likely doe's not need another Spanish language station, but the all around issue simply and you can't get around it, is money and number's....

Miami, Florida, and Orlando radio, like Houston has it's fare share of Spanish language stations, theres no getting around it, and sometimes I think Miami and Orlando have more Spanish stations then I have hair's on my, well you know.

I had the good fortune of working in Houston radio 790 KKBQ KLOL and a couple of others way back when. At that time Houston had limited Spanish facilitys, however no secret, the times have changed and this I'm afraid is the way it's going to be for now.

Truthfully, as a good ole American, born and raised, and and maybe I should be ashamed to say this, and this may STING a little, I'd be inclined as a radio station owner in these neck of the woods to own and operate a Spanish Language Facility, simply put, the money is big and the number's, huge.

Common fact, numbers and dollars speak volumes and as unfortunate as it is, these big corporate conglomerates who own these stations could care less about, us, the listener and what we think.... Numbers and dollars numbers and dollars....

Actually, Orlando only has one truly viable Spanish language station, WRUM. WNUE is an ultra-rimshot, and vulnerable to an FM with a better signal.

None of the Spanish language AMs in Orlando is significant competitively; of 9 of them only two make the book, and neither even gets a one share.

But your point is well taken: stations will appear in any format... or language... in poportion to the opportunity to make money that the owners perceive to exist.

Why add more Spanish language stations? Not all Hispanics in Houston speak just Spanish. What about all the 2nd and 3rd generation Hispanics that are quite large in population in Texas? Why not have an urban style format with emphasis on classic dance, freestyle, hip hop mixed in with some new rhythmic such as KBAY in Corpus Christi? That would probably be a good format for Mega if they morphed into that type of format, hell throw in a Spanish tune here and there. I'm tired of Hispanics being labled as strictly Spanish speakers who only want accordions in their music. It's like saying all African Americans listen to rap or all whites listen to country.

Did you forget Mega 101 was in pure english when it started and then flipped to spanish.

I remember when 101 was in pure English. Long before it flipped to Spanish. Perhaps it's time to let a new bunch of kids have their day in the sun. Sure do miss my friends though.
