How 9/11 changed television

I can't believe its been five years since that infamous day. Bt I am not here to talk politics. I wanted to note how 9/11 has chaned the landscape of television.

1. newscrawls. I don't recall seeing much of these on loal or cable news until the coverage of 9/11 and its aftermath so the channels could relay news and information that was not being discussed currenty on the broadcast.

2. Super Bowl moving to sweeps month: Because the NFL cancelled its games the Sunday after the atacks, the Super Bowl had to be moved back a week into Febrary. The game has remained in February since, I assume becuase of sweeps and the oppotunity for netorks to use the game and its ratings for advertising rates for their other programs

What other lasting effects have be seen indirectly or directly in the world of Television because of 9/11?

As for the Super Bowl...not quite. Super Bowl XXXVI (New Orleans-2002) was pushed back to the first Sunday of February. Super Bowl XXXVII (San Diego-2003) was on the last Sunday of January. Starting with Super Bowl XXXVIII (Houston-2004), it's been on the first Sunday of February. That's so the greedy network which has the rights to it (XLI is on CBS), it helps boost their numbers for February sweeps.

As for the newscrawls, I think NECN (New England Cable News) out of Newton, MA already had one going at the bottom.

There weren't. Perpetual news crawls were borne of the events of 9/11. Prior to that, they were used only occasionally on channels. Bloomberg would be the exception but their channel was busy anyway. The primary reason for them was actually to convey information to viewers who were near TV's in businesses and other locations where there was no sound. That was CNN's reasoning anyway.

The other big thing that showed up after 9/11 was the flag competition. Which network could throw up more flag images on the broadcast. Fox News seemed have won that contest. We also had some networks showing electronic ribbons.

Post 9/11 it took at least until the New Year before it was in fashion to criticize the president. Shows like The Daily Show stayed off the air for about a week and returned to some awkwardness for a few months.

What amazed me about the newscrawl was that every network put one on at the same time. I suppose it was a copycat thing, but they all went from none to continuing them to this day. I guess someone was technically first, but it sure looked like the concept was sitting dormant and activated that day as fast as they all got them started

>>newscrawls.

yes--and in some cases there was more than one crawl at once...got confusing, so it got changed.

MLB's only World Series to extend into Nov. took place in '01 due to a week's worth (or so) of games being postponed, pushing everything back. I believe the 7th and deciding game of Diamondbacks-Yankees aired 11/4/01.

ESPN and ESPN2 had a crawl pre-9/11. ESPN2 had one from their first day of broadcasting, it was considered their calling card.

Fox News Channel was the first cable news network to use the crawl, this is according to my 2001-2002 High School Yearbook. There is a special spot for 9/11 and it shows a screenshot of FOX News Channel and a caption says they were the first.

I must say im not a fan of the crawl. It use to be the things that were on the bottom of the screen was stocks and the current time, i miss that. This is something ive noticed, if im not mistaken, FOX News Channel is still using the same "Live" graphic since that 9/11 and the days after. The one with the American Flag and the wind blows and it says "FOX"......."Live".

I find it shocking as I sit watching Letterman tonight. He has yet to acknowledge the 5th anniversary.
Jay Leno, however, is devoting a huge portion of his show to remembering 9-11.

Seems to be "everything" became "urgent."

Right after 9-11 we then got the anthrax attacks and it seemed for a bit that the US would be under a lot more pressure, almost at war.

Then when 9-11 was settling and the anthrax stopped there were no "urgent" news so virtually anything became a "news alert" to the stations.

Wait until next week when they remember the 5th year anniversary of Dave's first show after 9/11. Remember the part where Dan Rather breaks down in the middle of Dave's interview?

Cheers :D

Hence the era of news that's really no longer breaking being (re-)labeled as "Breaking News" was born. :(

See above.

Cheers :D
