How about Alternative Talk on WPRV

6-9 Mancow
9-12 Beck (grab him from HJJ)
or
3-6 Hannity

Throw in Tony Carnetta for three hours somewhere
Toss in some Laura Ingramm.

I'm sure there are some other shows they can place on 790.

Beck's show isn't that good, Hannity's show isn't that entertaining either & I'm a conservative saying that. I haven't heard Mancow's show & Laura is on WADK. I wouldn't put libtalk on 790 but I think there's a niche for an alternative talker, sure. I'd say hot talk but that fizzled out 10 years ago. WTKS was THE template which I got to hear but I dunno if our old-leaning market would support a similar format.

Why not put Progressive Talk on 790? The radio dial is already awash in conservative voices from both Providence and Boston-area stations... WPRO, WHJJ, WRKO, WXKS, WCRN, WTKK. And isn't Rhode Island one of the bluest states in the nation?

How's this schedule?

6-10am...Imus (Citadel)
10am-Noon...Stephanie Miller (Dial Global)
Noon-3pm...Ed Schultz (Dial Global)
3pm-6pm...Thom Hartmann (Dial Global)
6-8pm Randi Rhodes (Premiere)
8-10pm...Michael Smerconish (Dial Global)
10pm-1am...Alan Colmes (Fox)
1am-4am...Leslie Marshall (?)
4-6am...Bill Press (Dial Global)

Imus isn't liberal but he's not conservative either. Some progressive talk stations run him if he's not heard elsewhere in the market. And Smerconish is middle-of-the-road but is on MSNBC frequently, so that gives him some progressive credibility.

I like Imus in the Morning 6 - 10
Tony Cornetta 10 - 2
A Hannity or Laura Ingraham 3 - 6
Something like that would sound good on WPRV
I don't think the Business Talk is doing much for anyone

Seems to me that 790 has pretty much limped along for the last many years, going through one format after another, none of them really having much impact at all.

Which leads me to wonder......

Could it be that 790 has finally reached a point where it is no longer viable, or even necessary? Holland Cooke has often talked about how 93.3 is the "one music station too many". Could 790 (along with 1320 and 990)...be one of "a few AM's too many?"

Just a little food for thought on this Memorial Day.

Too bad they couldn't lease it to WBZ-FM. I know alot of people who listen to the HUB.

Just a little food for thought on this Memorial Day.

Here's an idea from out in left field. What if the owners of AM 1110 buy AM 790 from Citadel (soon to be Cumulus). They can move 1110's programming to 790, get a 24 Hour Signal (not to mention a killer daytime signal), then take 1110 dark.

Renedering no service to East Providence. Or, how about they move to 1220 & Shine goes dark. I like that one better!

That could be quickly fixed just by having 790 apply for a COL change from Providence to East Providence. There would still be plenty of stations, both AM and FM.....with a COL of Providence.

But, I still wonder: what's the point of taking 1110 dark? Because it's a daytimer? You'd still have 2 other daytimer 1110s in New England (Salem, N.H. & the one in Western Mass.) so that wouldn't provide interference relief to them. The only benefit I can see is 1090-1120 wouldn't be interfered with @ night because someone forgot to shut off the transmitter locally.

Plus, daytimers can provide good service to their communities. Look @ WADK. Except for having the WOR Network on, they do a good job of local service to Newport County.

Craig Healy once told me that 1220 could have diplexed with WHJJ,increasing day power to at leas 5 kW, and perhaps getting enough night power to become a Class B. But then-owner Art Tacker balked at it. 1220 is presently a Class D with 166 watts at night.

This from the Boston Board:

WILD 1090 is taking world news from a Chinese perspective, more specifically China Radio International (CRI), featuring news, music, language lessons and human interest stories from China live from Beijing. CRI is leasing airtime on WILD's daytime only-signal.

Now HERE's something completely different that Cumulus could try on 790, or Peter Arpin's 990/1320.

One thing is certain....Those checks from China would not bounce!!!; ;D ;D ;D

Happy 89th anniversary to R.I.'s oldest station! That'd be the current WPRV, formerly WEAN. On air 6/2/1922. Did they imagine it'd be around this long?

I rather doubt the folks at the Shepard Co. had any inkling that their station would still be going long after their demise. My grandfather used to refer to them as "Shepard's", and to 920 as "the Outlet". Putting CRI fare on 790, or 990 would be a good idea.

Hannity is still on 920 AFAIK...
Prog dir of HJJ: "The Air America experiment is over" when they flipped to conservative talk.
Sister station WXKS 1200 in Boston area (had calls of WKOX before) had been prog talk,
now also conservative talk. (Ratings not much better than when it was prog talk, admittedly,
but they have morning local show)
